View Full Version : Two questions (and yes, I read the forum rules)-
thedelihaus 11-16-2007, 12:32 AM Two questions (and yes, I read the forum rules)-
1. Is this going to be a safe haven for positive cable discussions? I'm not spensing lots of money on cables, but owning about 6 bargain boutique pair, all less than a year old, I'd be interested in reading more about cables here, without flame wars and opinions if cables make a difference or not.
I'm more interested if you are using them, did you notice a difference in your system, and how?
If this is the case, I'd review my bargain botique cables and post about it here, since it's a new product.
2. What constitutes "new"? Brand-new? One year old? 5 years old? 90's gear and up? Is this the place to discuss PS Audio, PSE, EAD, B&K, and other 90's and up goodies? Or only 2000-up, or stuff brand-spankin' new?

tentoze 11-16-2007, 01:04 AM 1) Thinking Out Loud Forum is already the "safe haven" for open discussions on cables, among other things.
2) Negotiableterms will have to provide the definitive answer regarding what constitutes "new". However, I think the term "modern" was chosen in the forum name to differentiate from the classic silver-era gear that is already well-represented in other forums at AK. I doubt you will get a specific dart on a calendar that says, "Anything beyond this date is acceptable."
Arkay 11-16-2007, 01:11 AM I would like to see more open discussion of people's actual experiences with various cables, too... while recognizing that the whole topic is fraught with controversy, let's keep open enough minds to allow this, please.
Unfortunately, my cables are a combination of mid-quality new and used and DIYs, no really high-end/esoteric stuff, so I can't add much of substance to this thread, beyond interest and another :lurk: .
Oops! Was writing my post at the same time as Tentoze, missed the bit about "Thinking Out Loud" forum. There is as good as here, but in any case I'm glad there is at least SOME place for modern-day gear discussions.

Thanks. Points me in the right direction.
I've moved to a couple of black Denon POA amps, but I wouldn't call them vintage, though calling them modern might be stretching it as well. A PS audio piece I have, and a possible B&K amp & PSE pre are another I'd not call vintage, but would be inclined to possibly classify here, or at least on the cusp. Same for the Thiels and Vandies.
Guess we'll see how it unfolds.
Anyhow, great addition to the site.

Really surprised you guys haven't seen all the cable threads in TOL. Or all the cable threads that have been moved there.
As far as the age, post away and we'll see what happens.
Just don't be dragging your SX-1980's or 2020's into here. :)

Per the Catagory heading, "21st Century Audio."
To be very technical it begins on January 1, 2001 and will end December 31, 2100.
A common misconception is that it started in 2000 and will end in 2099, but due to the fact that there was no year zero, 2000 is part of the 20th century, not the 21st.
As a general guideline, this is for modern equipment -about the last 10 years. I would say if you have to ask, it doesn't go here.
wajobu 11-17-2007, 08:53 AM So, I assume that new tube gear counts

Modern, noisy and effective...it's the guts of my little Vista P6 SE (protoype, sans the trannies) with PCL82 Output tubes.
A thundering output at 5 WPC, and it's a little heater. :naughty:

I haven't ever used any brand name cables but I do make my own. (16 gage paired twisted coper wire with crimp on connectors.) :music:
I can also say that it is not a good idea to use 22 gage paired wires (the kind that come with cheep store bought stereos) to connect your 35w RMS receiver to your big 3-way speakers. What a difference.
