View Full Version : Switchin' to the 70s (or was it the 80s?)
Fast_Eddie 11-17-2007, 09:21 PM I guess it was a little bit of both.
I'm going to start collecting some songs I remember from when I was a kid. In 1980 I was 13 and couldn't afford any records. Not that I had anything to play them on if I had them. But there are a bunch of songs from that time period that I want to dig up. Wondering if you guys have any to add to this list:
Donnie Iris - Ah Leah
The Kings - This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide
Sweet - Love Is Like Oxygen
Sweet - Fox On The Run (yeah, they get two)
Mott The Hopple - All The Young Dudes
T Rex - Bang A Gong
So, I don't even know what to call it. Is it Glam? I think some of it is, but is Sweet really Glam? But somehow these songs all have a similarity. There have to be dozens of them. I'd love to collect them all and have a rockin' Seveighties mix tape.
What would you add to this list?
For fun, here are some youtube links in case you haven't heard some of these songs in a while...
Take care,
Ed

Ok, I don't say this very often, but this is great iTunes material. Believe it or not, most of these songs are there. It's not like I really need the ultimate in fedility to crank "Fox on the run" when I'm crusing around town!

Lene Lovich-Lucky Number
Mental As Anything-If You leave me(Can I come too?)
Holly And The Italians-Tell That Girl To Shut Up!
Ian Llyod-Goosebumps: This is a great, great undiscoverd LP!!
The Cars are the backing musicians and Llyod's voice is just amazing, in an early Rod Stewart kind of way. Although this is glammy/new wavy. Not Rod Stewartesque.

Yeah, I just watched the Ballroom Blitz video on youtube. Yeah, uh, that'd be Glam.

Yeah they started taking themselves too seriously after listening to too many 'prog' records!
Still a great song though. IIRC correctly there's like 10 minute version of that song somewhere. They had a radio edit that was like 3:00 minutes that cut out the whole middle piece.
Zadok2112 11-18-2007, 01:57 AM There was a late 70s American band called Angel that would have fit in comfortably with early 70s Brit Glam.

Zadok2112 11-18-2007, 02:25 AM They got it all but how when Glam was mixed through Punk it ended up as Goth.
VinylHanger 11-18-2007, 02:40 AM Two songs that epitomize that time for me were:

This starts getting into an era I'm more familiar with. Bauhaus still finds it's way onto the stereo from time to time. Great stuff. I remember the first time I heard Dark Entries I thought Satan himself had made a record.
Macdude 11-19-2007, 12:20 AM It worries me that I forgot to include Pop Muzik, one of my all-time favorites, as well as it's B-side "M Factor".
gearhead 11-19-2007, 10:35 AM It worries me that I forgot to include Pop Muzik, one of my all-time favorites, as well as it's B-side "M Factor".
I have a video compilation with that on it, and it says it was copyrighted in 1970!
Could that be right? It came out in '79 or so, didn't it?
Macdude 11-23-2007, 12:42 AM Yeah, the album that Pop Muzik is from is called "New York, London, Paris, Munich" and according to the copy in front of me it says 1979. M Factor wasn't part of that album, so it may just be an earlier track. There isn't really too much of an electronic sound to it, but it still sounds like a work from the late 70's/early 80's with it's lyrics and it's overall style.

I was never a fan of punk nor of the newer "goth", but that late 70s early 80s "glam/punk/goth" always appealed to me. :scratch2:
Alien Sex Fiend, Bauhaus, Christian Death, etc.
I'm a weird kid like that.
