View Full Version : Interesting rock records that sound amazing!
thehort 11-18-2007, 06:10 PM I know the obvious ones (Zep, Stones, Sabbath and so on)...but i'm looking for some new ones...something a little less overplayed maybe.
Current vinyl that's really bringing the most out of my system is:
The Raconteurs-Broken Boy Soldiers
Earthless-Rythms from a cosmic sky
Gang of Four-Entertainment!
Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins (not really rock...but sounds phenomenal)
What vinyl makes your system sound it's best? And makes you happy you discovered it.

M.Jackson-thriller (yeah, I know..)
Metallica- justice for all
Modest mouse-Moon and antarctica
Dire straits- Communique
Supertramp-Breakfast in america
Just a few..
The new Minus the Bear lp - "Planet of Ice". Great sound, nice vinyl pressing (cut at 45rpm over 2 discs), and very, very good songwriting.
Mike

jonman 11-19-2007, 12:56 AM Taj Mahal- Dem old folks at Home\Giant Step
Spectrum77 11-19-2007, 06:36 AM I see Communique there- fer shure... Roots reggae is playing ATM- Burning Spear Marcus Garvey/Garvey's Ghost (dub version). Very smooth hi-fi, plenty of music to listen to.
Mystic 11-19-2007, 10:05 AM A lot of the new weird (wyrd) folk sounds excellent and is often released on high-quality vinyl in remarkably nice packaging -- origianl lithographic art, etc. Look for it on such labels as Eclipse Records, Wholly Other, Kranky Records, Holy Mountain Records and especially Time-Lag Records. The artists who record on these labels include:
Six Organs Of Admittance (Ben Chasny)
Espers (Greg Weeks)
Fursaxa (Tara Burke)
Charalambides (Tom Carter and Christina Carter)
Jack Rose
Matt Valentine & Erika Elder (aka "MV & EE")
An excellent compilation/sampler of this music is available on the 3-LP vinyl album By the Fruits You Shall Know the Roots [Time-Lag 020-022]. (nb: this comp is OOP, so off you go to ebay, eil, gemm and the like)
cfranz 11-19-2007, 02:06 PM King Crimson - In the hall of the Crimson King
Clannad - Macalla
Doobie Brothers - Live at Wolf Trap -and- Minute by Minute
I second: Dire Straits ~ Love Over Gold
'Private Investigations' is astonishing.

hifidolatry 11-21-2007, 10:16 AM Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson
I could write an essay on it, given that it was one of four or five 8-tracks my father owned in the early 70s. I still listen to this on vinyl and half expect the mid-song track changes to kick in. Really not a bad song in the bunch, but that could be happy memories talking. Recommended, if you can find a copy that hasn't been used as an ash tray.
BONUS: you can play "Jump Into The Fire" in the car and pretend you're Ray Liotta trying to evade FBI helicopters, sell weapons, drop someone off at the airport, and get the sauce just right.

Yeah, Schmilsson was a weekend score. Disc was dead mint, the cover was eh. Then again, you don't play the cover.
Ironically, I passed up TWO copies of French Kiss last night. DOH! The leg shots alone are worth 50 cents.

hdrl1935 11-21-2007, 07:45 PM Vote another for 'Year of The Cat'!!! I just picked up a MFSL of this for $10 at the local record store. WOW! What a treat. I like it much better than the Janus version. Or could be my Janus is worn out. How about Jimi Hendrix/Axis: Bold as Love. Great sounding record.

Country Joe and the Fish, "Electric Music for the Mind and Body". It's their first LP and on Vanguard and it sounds fantastic, really recorded very well. My mono version of The Rolling Stones "Flowers" sounds pretty good too.

rushfan 11-21-2007, 10:40 PM Saga - In Transit.
Canuck band recorded live in Europe back in '82. Early digital recording that sounds absolutely amazing. Better on vinyl than CD (no surprise there).
This is the vinyl that I use to test my rig. My go-to CD of choice is Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms.
I'd also like to cast a vote for Max Webster - Universal Juveniles.
Vehto 11-21-2007, 10:57 PM I don't know if you really want something listen too something

Country Joe and the Fish, "Electric Music for the Mind and Body". It's their first LP and on Vanguard and it sounds fantastic, really recorded very well. .
Man you hit the nail on the head with this pick. I found this album somewhere for a few bucks probably 15 years ago when there was still a lot of psychedellic goodies floating around flea markets and yard sales. The record just said BUY ME AND I'LL BLOW YOUR MIND. So I did, and it did.:music: Since then I have bought all the Country Joe And The Fish I can find. Most of it is pricey if you go to the RIP OFF (record) store.
Most of their stuff on Vanguard sounds great. Some of the work is better than others naturally but I don't have ANY CJ&F that I don't like. :thmbsp:
If you have none of their music and want to explore then you should start at the beginning with "Electric Music For The Mind And Body" (1967) and then "Feel Like I'm Fixin To Die" if you want a second helping. The earliest version of the band to me was the best and some lineup changes happened within a very few years. The two albums I named are the original band.:music:

I must have a bad copy of this. Mine is poor sounding. I love this record and would like a good copy, Which version is the one to buy ?

Tubejunke 04-05-2008, 01:43 AM I don't know if has already been mentioned but Santana's second album "Abraxas" is definitly a great stereo/sound workout.....
I also like both live Cream albums for raw power and volume. Little stereo dynamics though...
Roypercy 05-27-2008, 11:45 PM Tom Waits, 'Rain Dogs"; the track "Jockey Full of Bourbon" is my favorite 'test the new setup' track.
