View Full Version : Dream Theater -- Any fans?
soundweasel 11-21-2007, 08:43 PM Any Dream Theater fans out there? Which are the band's best recordings? Why? Which eras of the band history are "best." I'm interested in obtaining some of their albums, so thanks in advance for your input.
Drybasement 11-21-2007, 09:08 PM I was first turned onto Dream Theater when Images And Words hit the radio waves with the infectious Pull Me Under. That was around 1991 or so. It wasn't until ten years later that I discovered the band in all their glory. I've grown to love all their albums and have become quite the fan. Anyway....Images And Words is a great place to start. Awake is another killer. The album that I am listening to now, Scenes From A Memory, is a classic. If you buy one DT album this should be it. My favorite DT album (which is not a fan favorite) is Falling Into Infinity. I absolutely love Train Of Thought and Octavarium. I'm a bit underwhelmed with Systematic Chaos though. Ymmv.
Cheers
vinyldavid 11-21-2007, 10:09 PM I love them.
Favs: Images and words and Live in New York, and Octavarium. I really didn't like Awake. That's all I have.
Strangeband 11-21-2007, 10:30 PM I may be the skunk at the picnic on this thread, but I cannot honestly say I like Dream Theater. I've given them an honest listen but their music is simply not something I enjoy. Soundweasel, PM me with your address if you want my copy of Octavarium.
Urizen 11-21-2007, 10:31 PM I've been a D/T fan since their first release.
Back then, it was pretty cool to see four musicians from the Berkley School of Music make it.
I have most of their catalog, including DVD releases. Great prog/metal band.:music:
Drybasement's list will get you there, although I feel differently about Systematic Chaos.:smoke:

I know! But I do like Porcupine Tree, so all is not lost!
ekmanning5 11-21-2007, 10:45 PM I agree that Scenes From a Memory is pretty good. I think they have a live album of the same material that I'm not too crazy about. That's all I've really listened to.

All is not lost, Byron.
Your next step is Opeth.:smoke:

Funny, every album I have it's spelled Theater. Take another look Ken. These boys are from the US. Not Canada.

Tryptophan is what Ken was alluding to Carl. You do know what this chemical does, right?

Dream Theater will put a big smile on your face bud. They're no turkey (tryptophan induces sleep).
Do you have anything by them? I can certainly set you up with some samplers. :D
CarlV 11-22-2007, 12:35 AM I'm stocked pretty well in Dream Theater. :)
