View Full Version : Integra vs. Grand Integra...
Elbowgeek 01-21-2004, 07:56 AM I have an Onkyo Grand Integra M508 power amp, but have noticed that there is another version simply labeled Integra (no Grand).
Is there any significant difference between the two? Seems like a bit of a gimmick to me...
Cheers
ohskigod 01-22-2004, 11:52 AM onkyo made an amp that looked very similar to the m-508 you have called the m-504 Integra. is lower on the foodchain than the m-508. From what i heard from Onkyo Fans, the M-504 is a great performer, but you can hear a difference between the 504 and the 508. Ive heard the 508 and of course loved it. They look very similar in pictures (the big power meters etc.), but the insides looked different, Ive heard people say the caps in the 508 are the "size of beer cans", but i also hear that these caps are prone to crapping out(in the 508, not the 504) did you experience that problem?
Elbowgeek 01-22-2004, 12:07 PM The only problem I've had (says he hammering on the nearest piece of wood!) is that, when I acquired it, one channel was bad. But that was a PC board with a thermal crack according to the tech - figures since the guy who owned it regularly pushed a pair of Cerwin Vega monsters to the max (and burned out their tweets as well). Easily and cheaply repaired though.
In mine, they appear to be using four caps per channel, definitely smaller than a Coke can, but there's a decent amount of capacitance in there for sure and the amp is a great match for the Klipsch RF-7's I'm using. The RF's seem to be able to take anything the Onk throws at them without complaint and the sound is quite nice. I'd like to put the 508 up against the Krells, etc. just out of curiosity, but oddly the $20 Pioneer SX 3700 I recently bought at the local thrift sounds, to my ears, every bit as good (tin ear, perhaps?).
As for the "Grand" part of the moniker, I'm sure it's merely cosmetic, although I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference betwixt mine and the non-Grand 508 I recently saw on fleaBay (now I know that I'm holding at least $791 of amplification :D).
Cheers
Elbowgeek 01-22-2004, 12:10 PM Oh, and I will say that the power meters are a bit of a disappointment. Big though they are, the needle is all but impossible to see move unless you're right up close. How am I supposed to impress all my friends and make the Joneses next door jealous with no meter movement?
I tell ya...

TOM1040 05-08-2009, 11:43 AM Old thread. Sorry. But.....
I am curious also. My Grand Integra list power @ 220 RMS. I have seen both 200 and 220 RMS. Did this product change power ratings and its name thru the production period?:scratch2:

The "non-Grand" ones must be the ones that go for $999 or less

I'm guessing that's because your speakers are only using a watt or two most of the time. Your Klipsch speakers are known for not needing but a handful of watts to get to ear splitting levels. Put the amp on a more demanding load and you'll see those meters jump.
piccolo 05-10-2009, 04:42 PM m508 has x1 button which doubles needle's response. i have both m504 and grand integra m508 and my friend here in the philippines is very lucky to own the m509. m508s without grand integra tags are japanese versions.
Toasted Almond 05-10-2009, 05:59 PM I have M-5090. It is but a mere "integra".

+1
Onkyo Integra components for the Japanese market do not have the Grand name on them. Dunno why.
piccolo 05-11-2009, 04:09 AM onkyo m504 and m508 shared the same design like the TOTL grand integra m510. i think that's the reason why they put grand integra tag on m508. m509 and m507 shared the same design and are more efficient than the grand integra models. refer to this link; http://audio-database.com/ONKYO/amp/index4.html
TOM1040 05-11-2009, 08:03 AM Okay, but please explain the differences in the rated power of the two versions of the 508. From what I have seen the "Grand Intergra" is rated at 220W RMS( 8 ohm) while the 'Integra' is rated at 200W RMS(8 ohm).
piccolo 05-11-2009, 08:32 AM m508 grand integras are international versions and were all made in japan so i think AUDIO DATABASE is indeed very accurate
TOM1040 05-11-2009, 09:24 AM So, I guess my owners manual is incorrect?
piccolo 05-11-2009, 10:08 AM maybe your manual is telling truth. if it's printed outside the land of the rising sun i think they gauge the actual power ratings. lucky you for having the original manual of grand integra m508. would you let us peek on the specs please..
piccolo 05-11-2009, 10:48 AM my integra brothers,

TOM1040 05-11-2009, 11:14 AM Notice that this was printed in Japan.
piccolo 05-11-2009, 11:35 AM thanks sir tom at least i now have a copy. maybe the onkyo international division did this in purpose as part of their mktg strategy and i think they only specified the actual power output. :scratch2:

Can you comment on the difference in sound quality b/w 504 and 508? Thanks.
