Due to the price and the cool blue meters I just picked up a 2440 with a SQA1 decoder. I have a few (probably dumb) questions about this unit since it obviously didn't come with and owners manual.

How do I hook it up to my 2226B for quad pleasure? Running it through the tape monitor seems to be the only way to use the "master volume" on the 2440 to control the 2226B as well. If I run it this way, I have to push the volume on the 2226B past about 3 o'clock to hear volume relative to the rear channel in the front channel. Does that make sense? It kind of freaks me out to run it at full volume all the time.

Any idea what the various 4 channel settings do/are used for? I'm a bit too young to have grown up in the quad era, though I do have a few LPs laying around that should be compatible. I have "discrete", "vari-matrix" and "SQ" options. Are these for different types of encoding systems? That vari-matrix knob sure is a strange little bugger.

I'd love it if anyone could send me a scanned manual or any advice on this strange new addition to my system.

Matt

I'll see if I can locate a manual.

The 2440 is a quad converter with a built in 20 watt amp for the
rear speakers. I havent ran into one these before so I'm attempting to
scrape up some more info on it.

It kind of freaks me out to run it at full volume all the time. It makes sense. This is the way it is supposed to work. The master volume control on the 2440 adjusts all channels at once. This will only work correctly if the volume control on you 2226B is at or near maximum.

I have "discrete", "vari-matrix" and "SQ" options. Are these for different types of encoding systems? That vari-matrix knob sure is a strange little bugger. The SQ option is designed to be used with SQ encoded records or tapes. The SQ matrix system was the most popular quadraphonic system of the quadraphonic era. There were thousands of titles released in the SQ format. Columbia, Angel and Capital were the big labels that released many SQ recordings.

The vari-matrix option can be used with QS encoded recordings. The QS format was another matrix format that never became as popular as the SQ format. One can also use the vari-matrix setting to synthesize quadraphonic sound from regular two-channel stereo sources. The results will vary from recording to recording, however, stereo records can sound as good or better than records specifically encoded for quadraphonic.

The discrete setting is used for quadraphonic sources that have four discrete channels. In the quadraphonic era, the discrete formats were Q4 (four-channel quadraphonic reel to reel tape), Q8 (four-channel quadraphonic 8-track tape) and CD-4 (Quadradisc records). One can also use modern multi-channel formats (SACD, DVD-A, dts music CDs and Dolby Digital) connected to the discrete input with excellent results. Good listening!

thanks tcdriver,

that cleared up a bunch of unknowns for me, now it's time to find some different quad albums and give all three decoder settings a try.
