View Full Version : What'd ya get from your Secret Santa?
luvvinvinyl 12-03-2007, 08:40 PM I know that some of you are still trying to figure out what to get, so this is a little early. Many of you, though, are like me, and hate waiting, so I am starting this thread. Now you have a place to show off your Secret Santa swag.
Don't tell me that all y'all are waiting till Dec. 25 to open your gift!
(Me? I'm still waiting...)
wajobu 12-03-2007, 09:15 PM Well, a nice looking flat cardboard box arrived at my place from some far away place in Michigan. Hmm....pretty soon I think that I will be thanking somebody for sumpin'.
Hopefully, something will be arriving at its destination soon enough :D
barrynsue 12-03-2007, 09:19 PM Have not sent mine yet as I am waiting on something I ordered. It may go out at the last minute or I will substitute but keeping my fingers crossed.

luvvinvinyl 12-04-2007, 06:23 PM Hey LV, who gets to pick a recipient for you or do you pick for yourself?:scratch2:
Here's a synopsis of the process. I created a spreadsheet of all the entrants, from the emails I received. I copied the list of usernames, and inserted them in a new first column. I called Grumpy, and asked him for a number between 1 and the number of entrants. He gave me a number, and I slid the first column down that many rows. I cut the bottom off the list, and pasted it back up, in the vacant upper slots.
Voilá! I had a random draw, with info ready to mail out, one line at a time.
I'm with Ernie, I hate to wait and have no will power!
My Secret Santa gift arrived today and WOW did he set the bar high for the rest of us!
SS did his homework because I love seperates and received a HK 500 tuner and matching HK 505 Twin Powered DC Coupled Ultra Wideband Integrated Amplifier. They look great together, I can't wait till they thaw out so I can plug and play!
These will be going to the office where they will be enjoyed daily, I've got music playing every minute we're there!
Thank you Secret Santa, I couldn't have asked for a better present!

We've all seen threads about curbside/garage sale finds for very small $$. Army's SS may have passed along some good karma, by creatively sticking to the limit. Remember, the limit is what you spend, not what it's worth. Kind of like many of the systems in our homes, "I spent $120 on my whole system, but it sounds like much more!"

I'm glad you are happy with the gift and it arrived safely. I was tempted to keep the Bill Withers LP for myself. I like his music and I took a chance on John Fogerty. I have always liked his style, especially from his CCR days. You didn't mention my mom's home made tamales...oh, wait, I forgot. I ate those already.:D Sorry. This was fun but I was a bit worried as I really had no idea what to get you. Anyways, enjoy and Merry Christmas to you and your family.

I'm anxious to check out the dvd "CROSSROADS, Eric Clapton Guitar Festival 2007" Don't worry about me exchanging it for something else. That's not going to happen. I'm sure it will please my palette. There are a lot of kick a.. artists on this dvd.
Once again, a sincere "Thank You".

Not even close, Scott. Only 18 of 43 have posted that they got their gift.

SPL db 12-17-2007, 08:00 PM Just got mine! Thanks Steve... errr... I mean Santa! ;) :thmbsp:
I opened mine up because the family and I are headed to Texas over the holidays
so I wouldn't have been able to take it with me.
First there was an padded envelope with a very nice Christmas Story greeting card.
Next was a CD-R compilation that I'll be listening to shortly.
But the best part was the "The Poo Stick 3000", which I believe to be made by our
very own Fotno!
As it's name implies, it's used to remove the poo from your shoes!
Made out of cherry wood and comes with a great set of instructions! :lmao:
Also got a box of goodies that included a set of four isolation feet, and a pack of audio-
phile grade AudioXsell CD-Rs with yet another compilation CD on one of the CD-Rs.
Thanks again Santa! :thmbsp:

VinylHanger 12-17-2007, 08:46 PM Finally got mine out last night. Procrastination being my middle name and all, I think I did pretty well.
Hey Walker, you know you want to open it. What if it is Christmas music or something, then it is too late to listen to it. Or what if it is a package of tortillas to use for Christmas dinner, ya never know. Then you would have waited too long. What if it is a small flat snake, it would now be a small flat dead snake. Just trying to help, you know you want to open it. :D

Scott the box of goodies was from me. Let me know how you like the reference disc I made for you. Its the one I use to audition systems with. It is very eclectic but each song is produced well and will bring out different strengths or weakness in a system.

Whoops! Sorry about that Luther... I kind of wondered if the box was from Steve... :scratch2:
I was really impressed with the reference disc!
What did you use to record the disc? Was it done on your computer?
Sounded really good on my computer setup, then I took it upstairs and played
it on my HT rig! :thmbsp:

Don't worry about it Scott. The important thing is the package made it there.
I don't think many would like everything on the disc but everyone should like something on it. The CD-R's are really nice, burn well and sound good to me. It may be psycho-acoustics, but hey, if I think it sounds better, it does. :D Yes this was done on my computer. The files are uncompressed wav done with dBpoweramp.
The Vibrapods can be used with any gear but works well with tube amps, CDP or turntables.
Drybasement 12-18-2007, 09:48 AM My Secret Santa gift arrived this morning. Opening the box revealed three nicely wrapped gifts in very suspicious looking sizes. Well, Secret Santa did his homework and found out I liked jazz, R2R tapes and vinyl rekkids. Contained within was:
Vinyl LP of Jazz At The Philharmonic At The Montreux Jazz Festival 1975 produced by none other than Norman Granz. A man famous for doing these kinds get togethers. Personnel includes Benny Carter, Roy Elderidge, Zoot Sims, Clark Terry, Joe Pass, Tommy Flanagan, Keter Betts and Bobby Durham. A fine collection of jazz musicians.
Vinyl LP titled Columbia Jazz Festival which looks like compilation of various jazz bands who recorded under Columbia circa 1958. Some Duke, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck. Very cool.
R2R tape of Brubeck's Time Out. Again, somebody did their homework and knew I liked Brubeck. Having the R2R of this is extremely cool.
R2R tape of Frank Sinatra titled A Man And His Music. An anthology containing some of his best work imo. I can't wait to hear this.
Thanks Secret Santa for cool gift.
Cheers
BroonsBane 12-18-2007, 12:55 PM I got my Secret Santa gift today too, came from the wilds of Minnesota. It seems to be some sort of LP of some weird kind of music judging by the cover...can't seem to bring myself to take it out though...here's the LP. Interesting...

centralflori 12-18-2007, 05:34 PM Well I finally got my secret santa gift sent out to the recipient today. This from someone who always does all their shopping on the 24th. I do this for three reasons, (1) I never can make up my mind and analyze the crap out of it. (2) I wait till the last minute so not to tell the recipient what the gift is. (3) Bigtime procrastinator here.
Sent it out "Priority", so it should get there in time. Also after reading the many shipping horror stories here I decided to see how many trees I could kill packing things up. Not really, used all recycled materials.:thmbsp: Hope all arrives safely.
centralflori 12-18-2007, 06:12 PM Received my Secret Santa gift today via FEDEX! As I am a big kid, there was no way I was waiting till Christmas to open that puppy. I have a rule that when ever FEDEX or UPS shows up, it is officially Christmas. Got an awesome t-shirt that has the following quote "Traveling 33RPM in an IPOD World". It is an XL in a stylish black color, very nice! Also got a very hitech digital Photo keychain (Sweet!). I am currently using my IT skills to put this bad boy to use.:nerd: Also got the classic Maxell "Blown Away" Poster. http://www.engadget.com/2005/12/16/maxell-brings-back-the-blown-away-guy/
Thank You Very Much Secret Santa!:thmbsp:
similost 12-18-2007, 06:59 PM Now talk about too freakin funny and ironic... I got my SS package today...
The only person (ok.. know of two) From Albington, MA... and what better person to be my SS....
I opened the box.. and first thing that rolled out was some Jack Daniels Coffee... YEAH BABY!!!... now Deli.. how would you ever know we like coffee and Whiskey? ROTF!!!!
I haven't opened up the electronics, but am very tempted, just to make sure it is OK..
I will for sure leave the card and the wrapped package until Christmas day.
I just got my new - used mixer in today, and was planning on moving stuff around in my rack, and have an amp I need to get into it too, so I figure I better unwrap the electronic piece to see if it is intact, and get it installed into the rack while I am moving everything else around.
How Ironic of all the people involved in this, Deli turns out to be my SS after spending a weekend with him.. TOO FUNNY!!!
similost 12-18-2007, 07:21 PM OK.. Well.. Damn Paul.. You are TOO MUCH!
I don't know what to say... This is by far the best thing I'm getting for christmas this year...
An AudioSource Model EQ Eight/Series II
Wow.. still kinda left for words.. but have I got a use for this..
I've got a parametric EQ on my main system, but listening to the TV through the system leaves the bottom end lacking most all the time. Since this has a Video in, and a main out, and not just a tape loop, I will be putting this on top of the television, and running the TV audio through it to boost the bottom end.. AND.. have some cool lights to look at!!!!
All I can say is THANK YOU PAU.. er um Santa... What a hell of a nice piece of gear!!!!
My SS gift arrived today from Vermont. It has a characteristic "square and flat" shape, so I imagine that it must be a pizza. :D
I'm going to wait until Christmas to open it...I love surprises!
Andyman 12-18-2007, 07:53 PM Mine actually came in two parts about 2 weeks ago.
There's a small box that came USPS I placed under the tree until Christmas, but a few days later a gift certificate from SoundStageDirect arrived via email..
What to choose, what to choose??????
Trust me, it's harder than it sounds...:thmbsp:

Great addition to your collection. I would have been interested in hearing that hammer dulcimer, though. There was even a song written by O'Carolan (Irish harpist).
wajobu 12-18-2007, 08:32 PM Yeah Ernie, me too; hammer dulcimer is actually quite nice!
luvvinvinyl 12-18-2007, 08:54 PM My SS gift arrived today, or, rather, a delivery card from the letter carrier. Had to run down to the post office, after work, to collect my package.
Since all y'all know how much I enjoy waiting, I opened the box, at the counter, just to make sure that nothing was damaged. Yeah, right! (Actually, the counter ladies are long-time friends, and former co-workers of my wife.)
WOO-HOO!!!
A Universal Classics & Jazz Japanese 200g re-issue of a DG pressing, Dvorak Slavonic Dances, et al. I'm really looking forward to setting aside an afternoon to get to know this piece. I'm going to have a tough time with the notes, though.
As if that weren't enough, and, easily, it should have been, there were 100 heavyweight 5 mil poly outer sleeves for my records! How did you know that I was sourcing these?
Thanks, so very much, Santa!

Hey- important tidbit here!
I'm not your secret santa- I teamed up with him to deliver you and Marsha something special.
When you were down visiting, you mentioned you dug the EQ, as it matched your "garage" system. right then I knew it was going to be yours. took all I could to not let you have it right then.
A few weeks back, your secret santa asked me what you'd like. we collaborated, and sent you the EQ as a joint gift.
I threw in the coffee as a bonus.
Plans were to send a bottle as well, but the new local postmaster, knowing my past history, said "no liquor" according to the rules.
So insteaqd, I sent a book, "Holidays on Ice", written by david Sedaris. Did you find that in there too? If not, go back and look. A small, 5"x7" book, I promise to be a blast for you to read. Let Marsha open it up. and before Christmas. after the hardships with family you two have had to deal with, you both need the laughs. And I am sure you'll have plenty of them.
So, thanks go to your caring, and still un-named secret santa (who is NOT me.:D) as well. he played thee most important role in this. I just helped a tiny bit.
Happy Holidays, my friend!!!!!!!!!!!
similost 12-19-2007, 07:24 AM I found the book.. it was wrapped, so was going to wait to open it.. but since you insist, Ill give it to Marcia to take and unwrap and read today at work..
You sure did help my Santa then.. cause it does match the amp perfect!!! I was thinking about using the EQ on the TV, but I can always use it in the garage on the Altec too.. but I was also thinking maybe about pre-amping the TV with the AMP TWO and using the EQ with that...
I'l be playing with it for sure until I figure out the best place for it. I might end up putting it in the basement in the workout room with the amp on my Communities for Marcia for her workout music..
Who ever my Secret Santa is.... THANK YOU!!!!!

That was the perfect idea Paul gave you. I know I'm kinda hard to figure out. My wife still has no clue about me.... She'll run yet.. LOL...
It is a really nice EQ.... I just hate to put it in the garage with all the steel dust I generate in there. Not real fond of having my AudioSource amp in there either, but so far I haven't had a problem with it. I just worry about the sliders on the EQ with the shavings..
I'm thinking I'll end up putting it in the basement for the workout room. It sure will be nice to adjust the sound. I like the sound of the AMP TWO I have, but I don't like not being able to adjust the sound.. that sure is solved now :thmbsp:
Thanks again. It really is probably the coolest thing I'll be getting this year. The wife and I only do little things, because we both pretty much buy what we want, so she would have never gotten me anything big like this.. that, and she has no clue on stereo gear...

Well many, many thanks. The music is fantastic (been through it twice now). I hadn't put the light theme together...a little slow this holiday season. They have the look of a crafted item but I'm no candlephile so I wanted to get the whole scoop. Excellent SS!

Njord Noatun 12-25-2007, 11:02 AM My "Secret Santa" really went all out for me: Three weeks ago, I received a vinyl-sized box from Soundstage Direct (I could hardly contain myself from prematurely opening it!) containing three absolutely pristine (they look brand new, in shrinkwrap, but how can that be possible?) albums:
Parliament's Greatest Hits: "Uncut Funk"
Johnny "Guitar" Watson: "Bow wow"
Dave Brubeck Quartet: "Time Out" (200 gram vinyl! Hey guys, isn't there supposed to be a $30 limit on these gifts?)
Absolutely incredible - listening do Watson right now, and can't wait to listen to the other two: Especially, "Take Five" - the syncopated drum solo in it is "Da Bomb", and I can't wait!
Thanks a million, Secret Santa, and to AK for making all this possible!

onepixel 12-26-2007, 12:08 PM Still waiting on mine. That's OK. How many of you still are waiting for their SS to arrive?
I'm still waiting for my SS present to arrive too. Hopefully I was good this year.

Merry Christmas to you!
You are most welcome--I sensed that Funk was good :D
Njord Noatun 12-26-2007, 12:44 PM I sensed that Funk was good :D Indeed it is: One of my favorite presets - now that OnePixel (or was it Snade? :scratch2:) alerted me to its presence - on Pandora is "Disco": Turn it on, turn it up; life is good! :thmbsp:
doucanoe 12-26-2007, 02:24 PM I opened my secret santa gift Christmas day and was very pleased. It was a 180 gram pressing of Mark Knopflers LP Kill to get Crimson!
Also contained inside is a CD version of the same :thmbsp:
Very well played Peter, I mean Secret Santa. I am holding off playing it until tonight or tomorrow when I have some time to myself. I'm very jazzed to say the least.
Thanks Santy Claus!

TWantiques 12-26-2007, 07:44 PM No opening presents before Christmas around here so I opened my SS gift yesterday. What a treat. I received 5, count em, 5 LP's.

A volume 1,2 & 3 limited edition recordings:

All the albums are mint and in their original shrink wrap.

Thanks Secret Santa!
Terry
BGRoberts 12-27-2007, 07:22 PM What a surprise!
My Secret Santa sent me an iPod Shuffle!

Looks like it'll be a LOT of fun!
Thanks, Secret Santa!

Whew! I was concerned that you might already have the LP. It's a nice bonus when the label includes the CD as well as the LP; I wish more labels did that.
I've bought myself a copy of Kill to Get Crimson as well, but haven't yet given it a listen.
Enjoy, and happy 2008!

Nope, I knew that it was available on vinyl but had not come across it yet. I have listened to it a couple of time through already and am really enjoying it!
I agree. You would think that the addition of a CD version would be inexpensive to do and really help increase LP sales.
It's always nice to have a "traveler" for the car :thmbsp:
Thanks again,
RC
whyaskit 12-31-2007, 11:56 AM I finally had a chance to spin the three records I got and they are fantastic. SS you did one hell of a job! Not often I get to spin virgin vinyl!
THANKS A TON!
Great music, this was fun!!
Oh and Terry (TWantiques), it was hard guessing what you might like, so I do hope that you do enjoy! I have all the albums I sent and really like both the sonics and the music.
marantzfan 12-31-2007, 01:46 PM Still nothing...Hmm...Maybe it got lost in shipping?:scratch2:
barrynsue 12-31-2007, 01:50 PM Hopefully, Ernie will contact those who were supposed to send a SS gift if he knows you didn't get yours yet. May be a valid reason (or not) but I would hope that our fellow AK members would fullful their obligation :thmbsp:
pioneervato 12-31-2007, 06:35 PM Just got a notice from the post office. My package has arrived from somewhere close to the North Pole.:scratch2: For some reason the mail carrier will not enter our courtyard gate to drop off the package. I was home when mail was delivered but the package was not dropped off. If I had known it was coming today I would have propped the gate open. I had my my newly rebuilt AR2ax's blasting some good tunes so she must have figured someone was home. Anyway, it will be off to the post office in two days. Looking forward to find out what it is. Will post my findings in a couple of days.

I sent mine via USPS priority (all I can get down here) on the 15th but haven't heard either way from the recipient. It was supposed to get there by Christmas. I check this thread a couple of times a day to see if he's chimed in but nothing yet. A quick check tells me that he hasn't posted anything since 12/17.
Ernie, should I PM him and give myself up?
Ray
2DualsNotEnough 12-31-2007, 07:57 PM Still nothing here yet.But our mail is notoriously slow.

luvvinvinyl 12-31-2007, 09:00 PM I'm going to send out pm's to everyone who hasn't acknowledged receiving something, and to people who's gift hasn't shown as having arrived.
Tomorrow.

And...I see that my recipient has his gift as well. This was a very cool gift exchange. Sorry for being so late to catch this thread.....:sigh:

Received my SS gift from my fellow New Englander cabinover well before Christmas (and it was even WRAPPED!) and it sat under the tree until the day. Let me quote Bob from a post dated Dec. 4 on the subject of trying to find me something:
I've really got to buckle down this weekend and find the right gift. Many posts from my recipient but buried in those HUGE threads and really not any clues that help me.
For a guy without any clues, he surely nailed this one more than he anticipated: A Classic Records 200g LP of Diana Krall's "From This Moment On". Superb!
Thank you Bob! :thmbsp:
winters860 01-02-2008, 11:56 AM Hi folks,
This Christmas was a hard one for me financially. I didn't get to give as many gifts as I wanted to and a lot of the ones I did were purchased with cash or gift cards I received as presents. I'm sorry to say I was sort of avoiding this thread.
I'd like to thank the fellow Buckeye who sent me the eclectic assortment of holiday vinyl. The Midnight Xmess was a hit. Hopefully, I'll get up to one of his shindigs soon. As for my secret Santa-ee, he'll hopefully understand that Santa's sleigh caught a flat, but is on-course to him now.
I hope everyone's holidays were of the enjoyable sort.
Joe

pioneervato 01-02-2008, 06:21 PM Well, I'm starting to get a little worried. I shipped out my gift to the US on December 4th and it seems that it still hasn't reached its destination. Only one more day left for delivery, I sure hope Monday is the day!! Send good Karma to the delivery gods everyone.
Well I went to the post office to pick up my package. I couldn't wait to get home to open it since I still had several errands to run. So I opened it while sitting in my truck in the post office parking lot. Thanks Mike! er, I mean Secret Santa! I got a very nice photography book titled "The Photo Book". Catchy. It is a collection of a plethora of some of my favorite classic photographs as well as many I am not familiar with. Secret Santa must have been spending time on the camera forum. Photography has been a big part of my life and this is one book I will be looking at over and over again. Best of all, it came from an AK'er. Thanks Mike, and have a great new year. You did good my Canadian friend.:thmbsp:
luvvinvinyl 01-02-2008, 06:41 PM By my records, the following participants are still waiting for their gifts:

Hopefully, this can be resolved soon. Thanks for your patience.
brainsmasher 01-02-2008, 07:40 PM I got mine with time to spare, some great CD's and an MP3 player that I got to hold for about 10 seconds until my wife took it and said it was too advanced for me. Maybe she is putting music on it for me, yeah right.
