View Full Version : Yay!
vinyldavid 12-05-2007, 07:39 PM I had my Teac A-3340S in the living room for a good cleaning. So I hooked it up to the boombox in my avatar, and threaded a tape. WOW! Never thought that a cleaning could improve already stellar sound. :thmbsp:
It did, drastically. It gets better.
I was doing homework in the living room, so I left the reel to reel in there overnight. I as playing a tape during dinner, and after I had fast-forwarded the tape, the Maxell reels matched exactly. So I called my mother over and she waited a while, so I thought of trying out the new sound on her. She sat down on the couch and I pressed play.
WHOA! After 90 seconds she was hooked. This is a lady that could not tell between laptop speakers and my JBL 4311's. :yikes: Now the best part: "I wouldn't mind having that in here, David." :deal: If a BOOMBOX hooks her, what's going to happen tomorrow when she comes home to JBL 4311's playing in the living room off of my Peavey CS-400....:smoke: :D
What do y'all think of this?

True, true....BUT the living room has MUCH better acoustic than my room. My room is acoustically DEAD. This also means no wars on gear every time I bring in something "new".
How many girls would be willing to go out with a sophomore in high school that routinely corrects his teachers and talks about analog? I met ONE. Long story short, it didn't go to well, and I am to blame for this. :tears: :whip:

Yeah, but better to learn your lessons now, as opposed to when you're 27.
vinyldavid 12-05-2007, 09:45 PM Good point.

BrocLuno 12-05-2007, 10:11 PM You'll find that analog girl someday :) It's more fate than hunting. One day you'll be standing there blabbing on to a bud and some girl will say "what did you say?" She'll actually ask if you can ... whatever. From then on your toast :):)

Agree with above!
David, you do have a head demagnetizer I hope? If not, put it on your list.
Reels are awesome. I have an A-3340S as well.... very nice machine built when TEAC was really at the top of their game.
Best,
Paul :thmbsp:

Ho head demag...yet! I need to find one. Any connections? It needs a lube job . Is it supposed to have tape braking?

David:
Best place for a head demagger would be the auction site. Demagging will also help preserve your recordings as a magnetized head will start to take away HF first.
The 3340S has tape braking, it should smoothly stop from FF or rewind.
These folks here have come through for me when others could not for reel to reel parts, and they are great with advice:

markd51 12-06-2007, 12:19 AM I've used the TEAC E-1 (I think that's what it's called, or?) demagger for 34 years on my 3340S. It's the one that looks like a Horseshoe.
It seemed to work fine all those years, but about 7-8 months ago, I broke down, and bought a new Han-D-Mag from US Recording. These are said to be the very best hand held bar none, and will set you back about $65, but I feel is well worth it.
True, HF will go to hell, and background noise will increase without periodic demagging.
As for braking, yes, there is braking for the two Reel Motors,, and when hitting stop, the deck should slowly decrease in speed, and then finally stop. It will not screech to a halt like from play to stop. If it did, the tape would stretch to the width of a thread. Mark

I take it that this approach is not working.
Time for a new plan, lad.

So I have noticed.
Thanks guys for all the help. When I get some $$$, I am going to get the Teac serviced, as I noticed some flutter tonight. I hope all it needs is lube. Is it normal for a fast-forward wound tape pack not to look perfect?

Certainly the Lube won't hurt, especially if you have no idea when Lube was last performed on this Deck.
And yes, it is common that the Deck won't wind tape as smoothly when fast forwarding, or rewinding.
Not only won't it look flat, and will have a feathered appearance, but will also wind onto the reel with uneven tension as well, and this is bad for tape.
I always would do all rewinding beforehand, and then play the tape at whatever speed thoughout the entire tape, to ensure the tape was properly wound onto the Reel. This insures the best storage of the Tape until you're ready to play it again.
Provided you always follow this method, and keep your Tape stored in a cool clean place, away from any magnetic sources, there's no reason why recordings you have made will last easily, 20-30 years, or more.
Lastly, I'd like to also comment about the Reel Tables that the Reels mount onto. Each of these Tables have the ability to be raised or lowered by screw adjustment. Insure that the Reels, and the Tape are exactly aligned with each tape Guide on either side of the machine. With being set too high, or low, this will cause tape edge wear, will cause extra wear on the guides, and also may be a source of wow-flutter.
Under these Reel Tables is a conical shaped Coil Spring to keep the tables tensioned when they are set.
My own 3340S came with two thin rubberized shims that were to be used on the Reel Tables with 10.5" Reels so the tape would be then at the proper height, and peoper Tape Alignment with the guides. They were then removed when one used 7" Reels.

lol That's hilarious.
David, my friend, she's out there, she absolutely loves analog and 5 will get you 10 you won't know that she's the one until it's too late. Enjoy the sound and the ladies will come with time.

And I thought I was the only 15 year old interested in reel to reel.......17 years ago!!
Keep up the good work!!!
