If you ever go to an industrial auction, see if you can find worn-out surface plates. They're useless as tools once the surface gets too far out of spec.

Rumour has it that King Cheops had the Great Pyramid built for his turntable..

Ahh, Maybe they can make a custom Plinth for my VPI Table? I'll take Black Italian Marble! (As if the Table doesn't weight enough as it is! lol)

Once was going to have a Quarry in Belen NM custom make a drop dead gorgeous Travertine Stone Base made for my VPI Turntable, and for 18"x24"x2" size, Sealed-Filled, Beveled Edges, Poly Coated, and mesh Backed, the price of $85 seemed quite resonable. Reasonable enough that another for my CD Transport/DAC would have been interesting as well.

The variety of colors (beiges, pinks, blacks, browns), and beauty of this stone was quite striking, bearing a resemblence quite close to Marble, but IMO even prettier. Whether sonics would be improved though is a big "If"?

Maybe one day when I get up that way again? Mark

I don't know. I really like what they are doing with concrete and broken glass lately. Solid, heavy, and kitchy. :D Looked great on This Old House.

I've been considering disassembling by Music Hall and putting it into a concrete plinth. Although, I wonder how a concrete platter would work... :boring:

A friend's husband who has been doing all manner of restoration work since the mid-1970s says we are in a golden age of counter-top materials, of every quality and dimension. He actually doesn't bother showing customers all the catalogs because they'll go blind for choice.

Might it be worth AK field trips to home supply stores to check out what's available?

Do it and send pictures. Here I am thinking about building wooden plinths out of laminated hard wood and you are getting ready to ROCK

OBTW - Windex cleans polished stone nicely (LOL) !

We have them refinished every year. They carry a calibration sticker like any other precision item. They come in different grades depending on how flat you need them to be. We actually have a couple of Pyramid plates and they hold up well.
You can get brand new Grade B Chinese plates for a song. They are kind of soft but would be pretty stable for a TT platform.
If you have the money Starret pink granite is the good stuff.

Send me a mold of what you want I'll fill it with Fine C mix Asphalt. That ought to dampen your vibes right down since it has all the weight of rock but is actually a composite. Just make sure Swede can run the Vibrating roller over the mold if you want her nice and tight.
