View Full Version : classical fans
vintageaudio 12-13-2007, 06:27 PM Classical fans....maybe you can help.
We all have our favorite piece of classical music and then we have our favorite version of that piece....
well, this is all leading to this: my favorite classical piece is Mussorgsky's A Night on Bare or(Bald, if you prefer) Mountain. The version I once had (and lost in a divorce) was a DGG recording with Lorin Maazel conducting. It was current on vinyl circa 1979. I cannot remember the orchestra.
Every other version disappoints me.......I need to find that version....would love to find it on CD...but would be glad to find it on vinyl or any form really.
Anyone know the version I mean? Can anyone be of any help in finding this piece?
thanks
WhiteSE 12-13-2007, 06:46 PM did you try www.gemm.com?
PaulParrot 12-13-2007, 08:55 PM Bob,
You're probably misremembering the label. Maazel recorded that, coupled with Pictures at an Exhibition, for Telarc in 1979. I've got it on vinyl. You can buy it very easily on CD, if that's the one it turns out to be.
vintageaudio 12-13-2007, 10:22 PM WhiteSE----thanks for the link. Upon your suggestion, I tried there--no luck though.
PaulParrot---you could be correct. My memory is not perfect anymore-lol. I guess it could be the recording you speak of...I would have sworn it was DGG......but I will find the Telarc on CD and buy it. And after I listen to it.
I will report back....might be a little while...but I will let you know.
thanks both for your help!
Bob
ta131js 12-13-2007, 10:48 PM I must have at least five recordings in CD or LP format. Ormandy, Mitroupolos, Gloschman etc. - I like all of them. Seeing Fantasia cemented my affinity for this music.
:scratch2: Did you know that there exists a (earlier) version before it was revised by the composer? I've heard it several times on local FM radio. Different ending, I think - you might want to check it out if you like this piece.
vintageaudio 12-14-2007, 07:25 AM ta131js-----I would like to....probably have not heard it!
thanks
merrylander 12-14-2007, 07:27 AM It was re-issued on CD by DG as # D-4776678 see if Amazon can locate a copy.
vintageaudio 12-14-2007, 11:28 AM I ordered this one today from amazon.....

The original version that I had.....had the title in German...it went something like (please forgive my spelling) "Eine Naught auf dem Kalenberg" and that is probably why I think it must have been on a DGG label. Anyone remember that?
thanks
vintageaudio 12-18-2007, 02:58 PM I received the Telarc mentioned above today.
It is not the exact version I was after.
However, it is very distinctly Maazel. And very enjoyable. I like it very much.
And the "Pictures" also on it, is excellent!
But the search goes on......and this makes me believe more than before than it was indeed a DGG recording I am after.
merrylander 12-18-2007, 03:55 PM Lorin Maazel was the music director of the Cleveland for several years. He did indeed record Night on Bare Mountain while there. He also recorded it with the Berlin Philharmonic and it is that recording that I posted the DGG number for, or at least a re-issue of the original on CD.
There are two versions of this piece, the original version as written by Modest Moussorky and a version scored by Rimsky-Korsakov. The latter is easily recognized because it has the ending with the church bells and the choir - this was not in the original, R-K just tarted it up a little.
vintageaudio 12-18-2007, 06:23 PM merrylander
Thank you so much!
That explains it, I believe.
The recording that I am dying to get my hands on is the one with the Berlin Philharmonic.
And now I will go to work and try to get it using the number you provided earlier. I tried amazon before without any luck...but perhaps someone else has it.
thanks again
vintageaudio 12-19-2007, 03:02 PM Everybody likes a happy ending right?
OK finally, Success!!!
I was pretty good on remembering the "title" after about 30 years--:D
The title on the DGG cover was:
Eine Nacht auf dem kahlen Berge
(A Night on the Bare Mountain)
merrylander was correct...it was Maazel with the Berlin Philharmonic
I went to the DGG site. http://www2.deutschegrammophon.com/home
It is no longer available as vinyl nor as a CD......but it IS available as MP3 download--go figure. Here is the info:

Now I wanted this so bad....I downloaded it with dial-up (we live in an area where neither cable or DSL is available)--over 2 hours it took for a 9 minute 50 seconds cut.
Did you see the date of this recording? Feb. 1959. That's right--Wow! 1959.
Now you might think that it would have to be a lousy audio recording...Nope--those master tapes musta been darn good! It is a fine audio recording.
And now I was able to listen back to back to back ...the versions I have and
IMHO this is by far the most dynamic, exciting version ever made! Amazing!!
I am so thrilled to have this in my collection once again.
Merrylander thanks for your help and encouragement--it kept me going and searching!
Any other Mussorgsky fans...any other lovers of "A Night on Bare Mountain" you should get this download!
And guess what? the price was $2.69  and of course-- no shipping cost-lol-:D. Hmm, something to be said for this downloading MP3 stuff eh?
:D:D:D
Yamaha B-2 12-19-2007, 03:23 PM The "Night on Bare Mountain" is here in this 8-CD compilation of Maazel's early years with BP: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00067GKG0/ref=sr_1_olp_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1198099207&sr=1-1. The problem is that all the less expensive sellers have terrible feedback. There are some on eBay for a few bucks less, where you can protect yourself by using a credit card through Paypal. If you look at the listings you will see that it is No. 25.
While I am not going over to dig it out to find who the artists are, the MHS LP I've had for 35 years is excellent. It is the solo piano work, as originally scored.
