I'm looking to buy some turntables for DJing, mostly Drum & Bass 12"s. Direct drive is a must I've heard, and people are telling me Stanton is the way to go. Any suggestions?
please help, total newb.

I think the Technics SL-1200 in it's variations are probably the standard that everyone else tries to match. If I were doing it for a profession, my search would start there.

Audio Tecnica PL120 is a fully functional DJ table. Has all the features you need, a pretty good cart right out of the box. Is $170 (original list $399) on Amazon with free shipping and no sales tax. I think it's a very good Dj table if you will not be running it 8 hours a night for years. If you will, maybe the SL-1200 is a little better.
I wrote a much longer and more detailed discussion in a previous thread about "Should I get the AT-PL120?" a couple weeks back.

thanks, I think I will go with the AT-PL120 if the "hum" thing isn't a problem.

I installed a Grado 78c for transcribing 78's and it has not made a single hum anywhere the arm swings. Can't say what the other Grado's will do, but mine is OK :)

I agree with dnewma04. If you are looking for a industrial grade DJ deck, any of the 1200 variants would be my pick.:thmbsp:

I'd go with the Technics SL-12x0's too. Preferably the mark 2 models and up. Their the "industry standard" as far as DJing goes, so to speak. All them Vestax, Numark and other shit are all copies of the 12x0 design.
As for the carts, start with some entry-level (ie. not so expensive) Ortofon DJ carts, then gradually go up as you learn. If you've got the cash and like to hit things straight on then give a try with the Shure Whitelabel system. Keep in mind that the stylus will wear out more quickly from doing DJ stuff then "regular" playing :).

For better or worse, the SL1200 is the defacto deck for this kind of work. No sense going any other direction. These decks are bullet proof and if you somehow do manage to break anything, every part is still available for cheap money.
I don't know nothin' for no DJ scratchin', but I do know that this is the deck for the job.
