Trying to breath life back into my old Dual 505 -1 turntable, which has not been used for many years. I am not an audiophile - just want to play
my old albums!

Greatly appreciate if anyone experienced can comment on any of the following queries.

1. Switch Plate Circuitry.

Once I got the various levers to operate the switch, the motor started running, but I noticed the R1 resistor (5K1, 5 W) on the circuit board started to smoke. I have replaced that, and the motor now seems to go OK. However, the resistor does still run quite warm (can keep my finger on it but it is warm). I guess this would be expected ? but wondered if anyone experienced can confirm this?

2. Drive belt - generic?

Obviously I need a new drive belt. The authentic item is fairly difficult to
come by down here in Australia (not to mention expensive). I wonder is it feasible to use a 'generic' belt if I could find one? Or is this a bad idea.

3. Drive belt - size?

Assuming the answer to 2 is positive, does anyone know the correct specs for the belt. Based on my old one, looks like 5mm wide, and circumference approx 350mm?

Greatly appreciate input on any of the above. Thanks.

1. That resistor is indeed designed to dissipate a decent amount of heat. I have one on my 1257.

2. If you're going to get a belt, try to get one as close in all dimensions as is humanly possible compared to the one you're replacing. Too tight, and you'll wreck the bearings. Too wide, and you'll scrape parts like the shift fork. Too thick, and the platter may turn too fast for the pitch control to compensate for. I speak from experience!

3. Look here for approximate dimensions of a replacement: http://www.turntableneedles.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=10041 and http://www.turntablebelts.com/dual.htm
