I'm talking about my Technics SL-5 direct drive, linear tracker that I bought new in the early 80's...She had survived many years and hundreds of LP's but alas, I just found a cracked plastic piece in her tonearm servo mechanism...this fatal wound was preventing it from tracking correctly. This TT isn't a "classic" by any means and replacement parts are certainly non-existent, so I guess I'll box her up and put her away (dunno why, I just can't bear to pitch 'er in the trash, not yet).

While this TT probably didn't win rave reviews, with its plastic tonearm, it served its purpose...since user interaction was minimal (put album on platter, close lid, and press Play), it kept me from inadvertently scratching the heck out of my albums in my "serious-partying" days (or should I say, "daze"). I guess I got my $180 worth.

Fortunately, I have two Duals to carry on the tunes, and fortunately I survived the "dazed and confused" times of my life.

RIP, faithful servant.

Sorry to hear of the SL-5's demiss. May it rest in peace. Sounds like it was a trooper though...

A fixer will show on the 'Bay and you'll get it for $15. Someday you'll tare them apart and re-assemble a keeper and sell the spare bits for $10, so your net will be $5 plus shipping. It just take time and an eagle eye :)

BOOOOO- My Dad bought an SL-6 new in 1983 and I was/am mesmerized by it. I bought an SL-5 based on my experience with his 'table and loved it! I also have my own SL-6, an SP-10mkII and an SL-B2. Guess you could say I'm a Technics guy thanks to those great linear trackers. Sorry for your loss.
