View Full Version : Living Chicago Blues collection
VinylHanger 12-27-2007, 10:47 PM Just wondering if anybody else has this collection on Alligator vinyl. This is absolutely the best compilation I've heard. Musically and sonically. Just incredible music. Right now I'm spinning volume 6 with Queen Sylvia Embry among others, earlier I had volume 4 with Scotty and the Rib Tips. Incredible stuff. Unfortunately the next 3 albums are still sealed. So I must now go and fill my glass with a nice big Winter Ale rip them open and enjoy. :D :music:
I need to find number 3 to fill out the collection. I was afraid this was one of those "archival" collections of old poorly recorded stuff that I am not a big fan of, but this is grade A rockin' stuff.
bjarmson 12-28-2007, 04:09 PM The only trouble with blues collections is you really get into, oh say Elmore James, and before you know it you're buying everything Elmore James ever did. On second reflection, that's not a problem.

That's something I'd recommend everyone do regardless. :thmbsp:
Andyman 12-28-2007, 04:52 PM I used to listen to those back at the library at Northwestern in the early 1980s, but didn't think they were on Alligator. Could be wrong though...
White covers with a stamped wax seal and B&W blues pics, right??? Real good music. Reminded me of my days down on Orchard Street when I could walk over to the DePaul area at Halsted/Lincoln/Fullerton and catch the live bands at places like B.L.U.E.S., Wise Fools Pub, and The Kingston Mines. Jimmy Johnson, Pinetop Perkins, Magic Slim and the Teardrops, Eddie Clearwater, Son Seals.
Yea, baby!!!:thmbsp:
JJJimmy 01-10-2008, 09:53 PM Just ran across this thread and had to break out all six LP's. Something I've always wondered...
First three have Red wax volume number seals, and the last three have green. However, Volume 1 disc label is green, 2 & 3 are black (with completely different lettering), and 4,5,6 all match Volume 1.
I thought that all were 1st pressings, but never really noticed the differences. Anybody know much about these, other than they sound FANTASTIC?!?
JJJimmy 01-11-2008, 09:02 PM ANYBODY???:dunno: (see post above)

Is this still being pressed or do you have to find it used?
VinylHanger 01-11-2008, 10:07 PM I found these in the used bin at GW for a buck each. I looked on thier site and it looks like all they had were cd's. I have been meaning to e-mail them and ask if they are still available on vinyl. They are well worth the money if you can find them at a decent price. Incredible sound as all the Alligator stuff is. I especially like the Albert Collins and Clarence Gatemouth Brown albums I have on that label. Clean open sound, you can tell real Blues lovers were behind these albums.
VinylHanger 01-11-2008, 10:14 PM Hey Jimmy, I just looked at mine, but 1-2-5 are still sealed so I can't make a good comparison yet. :D They will be unsealed in the VERY near future.

Seems like you made a nice find at the right price. :)
VinylHanger 01-12-2008, 12:48 AM It was a small miracle. This place usually has any number of Sing along with Mitch or Readers digest mood music albums. 12 mint albums in one shot, a miracle indeed in southern Oregon.
JJJimmy 01-12-2008, 07:27 PM Thanks, VinylHanger...let me know what ys find when you open 'em. And believe me...you're gonna LOVE 'em!
