Any fans. I'm listening to Pressure Cooker. Man, can that Cat play. Guitar sounds like a Hammond, but with punch..... smooth as silk. This was the first real Blues album I picked up a few years ago, one of my favs. :yes:

Yes, 'Gate' was wonderful. He played a mean fiddle too;
working with Professor Longhair, he did a killer version
of "Jambalaya."

I was fortunate to see him live at The Beale Street Music Festival, in the Blues Tent, before he passed away. He was one hell of a talented multi-instrumental bluesman, and put on a great show.

I'm in. I love "Long Way Home". I need to pick up some more of his stuff.

If you want something a little different but VERY good, try "Gate Swings". Half of it is a blues guitarist playing with a swing band backing and the other half is a swing band with a blues guitarist leading. Get the disc and you'll understand what I mean. Anyway, a great album.

Love him- we've got Gate Swings, American Music/Texas Style and Back to Bogolusa here.

I was lucky enough to be invited by VH1 to Les Paul's 81st birthday party, and many guest players got up on stage. At one point during the evening a man that looked like he was made of leather made his way on stage, and sat to the side playing somebody else's black 335 or similar. Les gestured to him a few times to solo, and just the sweetest sounds came from that guitar- I had only known Gatemouth as a fiddle player at that time, and really was floored by his guitar playing. Some players (Les Paul being one of them) will often inspire me to work harder at guitar, and develop whatever talent it is that I have. Some just make me want to quit. It takes a lot of confidence to get up on stage among the players there that day, and Gatemouth had the best night of all of them, easily.

Yep Vern I've seen him twice here in Albany. I was quite sorry to hear about his passing awhile back. I no longer have any of his music but he is on my short (or long) list of music to acquire in 2008.

He performs 3 or 4 songs with Canned Heat on their "Live from Montreaux" DVD, circa 1973. :smoke:

Just passing thru Jackson Hole, Wyoming in '75 and stopped in for a beer in a local watering-hole. Got to hear and watch 'Gates' entertain about 10 people. Paraphrasing Miles..."That Cat could play".

The only thing I've ever heard by him was with Roy Clark on the album Makin' Music. My dad loved that album when I was growing up and I thought it was pretty good too.

I really just started getting into the Blues beyond the B.B King/ mainstream stuff heard occassionally on radio about 3 years ago. As they say, always late to the party. A lot of these guys are starting to leave us. I would have loved to see him play.
