View Full Version : 2 songs you think are just beautiful...
VinylHanger 12-31-2007, 12:19 AM Just wondering what you would pick that might be out of the norm. By beautiful, I mean..... just that, the feel the sound the way they hit you. Could mean different things to different people.
My first two would be Southern Cross by Crosby and friends, and one that is a bit on the off path Jane Says by Jane's Addiction. They are just beautiful songs to me.

...part of the chills for me is the song reminds me of the North Cascades wilderness in the summertime - fields of mountain heather at timberline about 1 hour northeast of me, 100's of miles of ridges, many can go a year without human visitors...a real treasure

Its funny you say that, mine still has the celophane on it and the price tag for $4.88
Hmmmm, a couple mentioned here would be in the running for me, "What a Wonderful World" (Satchmo) and "I Will" (Alison Kraus). I'd have to add "Delaney Talks to Statues" by Jimmy Buffett. I'm a parrothead but even so, it's a wonderful song. Then I'd have to have a mental knock-down-drag-out to narrow those 3 down to 2.

roadie1 12-31-2007, 07:49 PM I hope you'll give me a little leeway here. I can't answer directly but your thread made me think of something. Years ago when I was having some down years I went thru rehab for cocaine addiction and one of the exercises we had to go thru was to pick a song off of one of the albums the center had to choose from ( actually a pretty good selection) and then they would play that cut and ask each one of the group (about 12 of us) how that particular song made each one of us feel.
It was really interesting to hear the different responses. While the song I chose made me feel one way it could make some of the others feel 180 degrees opposite, or at least give them another impression.
Music is cool that way I guess. It's whatever we get from it, eh?.....R1

That's great $4.25 was the Navy Exchange Price but if you bought it outside of the base albums usually were $4.88 - $5.25 depends where you bought it...I remember buying an album tax included cost me $5.75...boy I was bummed cuz I didn't get any extra money to buy the latest teenybopper rag with the Bay City Rollers...anyway on the Eric Carmen album listen to "That's Rock N' Roll" his is the original version before Shaun Cassidy, and also "No Hard Feelings"...great rock songs...that later being a little autobiographical about The Raspberries!!!!:music: I used to rock out with these on my Panasonic Quad Stereo with the automatic changer!!! And this just skimms off the top!!! I saw them in person, both by themselves and with Neil Young. It was almost a life changing experience(with a little help from my friend:smoke:). I used to tell people it was like a Folk/Rock religuious experience. When you see what some of these older bands could do you understand why the younger people back a few decades thought that music might somehow change the world. Truely if the masses were still largely INTO music the way they once were I say this crazy world would be a lot kinder and gentler.:D:D

Have you ever heard of Skype? It's an internet phone application. If you have a mic on your computer you can essentially use your computer as a phone with up to 8 people at once. The fidelity is terrible and I think the only way to pipe music in is through speakers and into a mic, but it would be an interesting way for everyone to sort of demonstrate the songs they are talking about, and have a live conversation at the same time.

Another favorite of mine. I actually had this LP in my collection for several years, as a carry over from my parents collection that got me started. Never played it and then one night I was hanging out at my bosses place after the bar closed( I was a bouncer), and he played this LP. We were talking about Airplane and The Great Society, and he wipped this one out. Great album to :smoke: to if you catch my drift. :thmbsp:

;)
Sandy G 01-03-2008, 06:26 PM "You Are Beautiful" from "Flower Drum Song', & "My Reverie" by Bea Wain. No, you haven't ever heard of either one. Too bad, they're both pretty songs.
mhardy6647 01-03-2008, 06:48 PM They have internet service at Ole Miss now?
R-R-R :-)
... and now...
I finally have a response to this thread. Listened to two beautiful songs on my 1000-mile roundtrip drive to MD, DC, and back to MA yesterday & today :-)
Dunno if these are the most beautiful songs that I can think of, but they'll do quite nicely for the time being.
* Patty Larkin Me and that Train (either the studio version with Bruce Cockburn on Stranger's World or the wonderful live solo acoustic version on a gogo)
* Cowboy Junkies To Lay Me Down on the Dead tribute album, Deadicated. The original version is quite wonderful too; it's an intrinsically beautiful song.
Tube Radio 01-03-2008, 07:01 PM A few more here.
Reflrctions of My Life by the Marmalade
Lucky Man by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
the full version of Miracles by Jefferson Starship
If You Don't Know me By Now by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes
Holding Back The Years by Simply Red.
How Can you Mend a Broken Heart the version by Al Greene and the version by the Bee Gees
Run To Me by the Bee Gees
Lollipops & Roses and A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes by Perry Como.
I have so many that I'll stop with what I have listed.
Tapehead47 01-03-2008, 08:26 PM In Memory of Elizabeth Reed - Allman Bros.
Thousand Cranes - Hiroshima
sqdlvr 01-03-2008, 09:00 PM Wake Up Everybody by Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes....Teddy Pendergrast's vocals just nail the message of the song!!!
hifidolatry 01-03-2008, 10:22 PM Have you ever heard of Skype? It's an internet phone application. If you have a mic on your computer you can essentially use your computer as a phone with up to 8 people at once. The fidelity is terrible and I think the only way to pipe music in is through speakers and into a mic, but it would be an interesting way for everyone to sort of demonstrate the songs they are talking about, and have a live conversation at the same time.
I did some checking, and the station I'm thinking of (which is private/member driven) employs Shoutcast (http://www.shoutcast.com/download/). Not sure how, but they tie real-time chat into the proceedings. Doesn't look like a major effort to fire up...I'm sure the idea has been floated here before by people infinitely more tech savvy...
superdog 01-03-2008, 10:27 PM Norman Connors-"The Creator Has a Master Plan"and "Bubbles"
From 1976 "You are My Starship"
Excellent jazz rb.Listen to the horns on "Bubbles"
shocley 01-03-2008, 11:08 PM These Arms Of Mine - Roy Buchanan
I thought that one would be relatively obscure, so I could mention it without repetition, and here it showed up on the second post. You'd have to be made of wood not to be deeply moved by it.
Two more:
Houses - Judy Collins
Fields of Gold - Eva Cassidy
Man I can't believe I didn't consider the MANY beautiful harmonies done by these guys! Good pick for one! Here's a few more:
Oh for those who don't know "CSN" is Crosby, Stills, And Nash and (sometimes) Young
Wooden Ships
Long Time Gone
Helplessly Hoping
Find The Cost Of Freedom
Carry On
When I'm looking at used vinyl, I snap up anything by CSN, or -Y, because it's impossible to get enough of those wonderful harmonies. It has to be in just good enough condition to leave my stylus still attached to the cantilever after playing it.
The only exception is Four Way Street, a real klunker because there's so little vocal harmonization. I suspect that some egos needed to be stroked.
Since I've already posted two songs, I can't mention Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.
Mike Huckabee must be rubbing off on me.
Tube Radio 01-04-2008, 02:27 PM I just thought of one more
Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye by the Casinos
Scorpion8 01-05-2008, 07:37 PM The River ~ Bruce Springsteen
hypertone 01-06-2008, 10:27 PM Otis Redding - Sittin on the Dock of the Bay
Pink Floyd - Mother
They give me goose bumps every time. :)
todd.brust 01-06-2008, 10:53 PM Unkle-Rabbit in Your Headlights
Deftones-U, U, D, D, L, R, L, R, A, B, Select, Start
something about those two songs....i just heard the deftones song within the last few days, i've had the album just finally listened to it...i love it!
screenersam 01-08-2008, 06:45 AM Good call - I love their live version from Made in Japan. :thmbsp:
I'll submit:
Nothing compares to you - Sinead O'Connor
Brothers in arms - Dire Straits
the Sinead O'Connor song was from the 'I Do Not Want...' lp. also on that is 'Three Babies', which is real sweet.
'Homeless' (Paul Simon's Graceland lp)
'Knocking on Heaven's Door' (Dylan, of course)
one more for the road...'Can't Rain All the Time' from the Crow soundtrack.
Windwalker 01-15-2008, 08:08 PM Hasten down the wind-Warren Zevon
Somebody loan me a dime- Boz Scaggs(with a WHOLE heaping bunch of help from Duane Allman)
golly not a single Bonnie Raitt mention yet, hmmm
Any version of that song that goes "Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine, I'll taste your strawberries, I'll drink your sweet wine..." I don't know what it's called, but that song always gets to me.
Herb Alpert and the TJB "Lemon Tree" Give these guys a chance, they put out some good stuff:)
bordeno 01-16-2008, 08:29 AM Bell Bottom Blues ........ Eric Clapton
Cast Your Fate to the Wind ........... Vince Guaraldi
cfranz 01-16-2008, 10:21 AM Ultravox - Oh, Vienna

4. Any version of that song that goes "Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine, I'll taste your strawberries, I'll drink your sweet wine..." I don't know what it's called, but that song always gets to me.
"Today" by the New Christy Minstrels (among others)?
JuicyMusic 01-17-2008, 11:24 PM 1. "Why" - from Diva, Annie Lennox
2. "Diamonds and Rust" - from Diamonds and Rust, Joan Baez
mhardy6647 01-18-2008, 08:39 AM Mark... may I just say that is it nice to see you posting here lately!
And Diamonds and Rust is certainly one for the short list of beautiful songs.
If you're a Joan Baez fan (?), have you heard her fairly recent album Gone from Danger? A couple of wonderful covers of Sinead Lohan songs (No Mermaid and Who Do You Think I Am?) -- also very beautiful songs.
JuicyMusic 01-18-2008, 09:05 AM Hi Mark---
I usually loathe the idea of being a "fan" - but I gotta say, I'd kiss Joan's feet any day! :-)
No, I don't have that record but maybe I should get it. It sounds great. After I posted about Diamonds and Rust last night, I put it on my iPOD and gave it a listen while snoozing off, and was reminded that the most "beautiful" song on there is really "Jesse" - which is simply a knockout.
Actually, I have a special JB playlist with maybe 50 "beautiful" songs on it! There simply is no other popular music voice like Joan's. Well, ok Joni Mitchell is a good second here, and that brings me to another beautiful song, "Dida" with both Joan and Joni "la la la'ing" along together!
The Left Banke - Pretty Ballerina
Moody Blues - Tuesday Afternoon
Mr. Lin 01-18-2008, 07:52 PM How Beautiful You Are - the Cure
GREAT choice! You and I have very similar tastes in music, and that was one song I would never have thought anyone would mention here.
My picks off the top of my head:
The Same Deep Water As You - The Cure
Time - The Chameleons
The Cure song is probably my favorite song period, from my favorite album - period.
shutupuface 01-18-2008, 07:57 PM "In My Life" - The Beatles
"Your Love Is Forever" - George Harrison
Mr. Lin 01-18-2008, 08:06 PM "In My Life" - The Beatles

Wolverine 01-18-2008, 10:51 PM Genesis -Follow You, Follow me
Linda Paloma - Jackson Browne
Ask me again and I will probably give two different ones.....it all depends on my mood and the weather -though the Follow you,Follow me is inscribed on my wedding ring so that one better always be on the list or my wife will kill me.......... :)
superdog 01-18-2008, 11:40 PM 1983 by Hendrix
Levon, Elton John
Yeah - 1983 is one bad ass song
spiderhead69 01-19-2008, 04:11 PM It's been said but
Halleljuah - by Jeff Buckley. While Leonard Cohen's version is good, it's the guitar work on this version that sparkles.
Starfleur by Sigur Ros
OneMalt 01-20-2008, 08:27 AM Hot Summer Day - It's A Beautiful Day
Weep For Jamie - Peter, Paul & Mary
JuicyMusic 01-20-2008, 04:53 PM In memory of John Stewart - -
1. "Pirates of Stone County Road" - from California Bloodlines
You can't help recall being a child hearing this. Dreams, dreams, dreams.
2. "Clack, Clack, Clack" - from Willard
Written to honor Robert F. Kennedy after he was assassinated. This is a beautiful tribute to RFK, which might now be appropos for Mr. Stewart himself.

I have never been a Joan Baez fan.
Ever.
Until I heard the song "Diamonds and Rust".
I'm still not a fan, but I love that song!
It somehow strikes a chord with me deep inside somewhere. :scratch2:
mhardy6647 01-20-2008, 09:08 PM Despite Joanie's many... eccentricities... she had a hell of a voice. It's still pleasant to hear.
Diamonds and Rust is indeed a mofo of a song. Wonder how Bobby Zimmerman felt about it?
JuicyMusic 01-20-2008, 11:35 PM Wonder how Bobby Zimmerman felt about it?

Great song that is! It is called "Today" by Randy Sparks, and was first done his New Christy Minstrels early 60s. Many excellent covers have been made too.
JuicyMusic 01-21-2008, 09:28 AM A couple more---
1. "Over the Rainbow" - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Alone in IZ World
I have 5 or 6 versions of Over the Rainbow and this one is my favorite. His simplicity seems to fit the song better than the usual big arrangements. Eve Cassidy's version would be my number 2.
2. "Darkest Hour" - Arlo Guthrie - In Times Like These (Live)
A great song from a great album.

I caught Katherine McPhee's cover of OtR on American Idle and it was AWESOME (that's about the only AI I ever sawed).
Eve Cassidy's 'Tall Trees in Georgia' is now part of my permanent collection.

"Short Stories" by Jon(Anderson) & Van Gellis
"Hold on tight to your dreams" ELO
Excumbrian 02-07-2008, 11:15 PM First two that come to mind:
"Sad Lisa" by Cat Stevens
"When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease" by Roy Harper (but I think you have to be English)
"Michelangelo" by Emmylou Harris (if the Roy Harper one's too British for you)
iggyks 02-11-2008, 11:09 PM I'm In Love With A Girl by Big Star and Tried So Hard by Gene Clark are the first two that spring to mind.
edwinr 02-12-2008, 06:05 AM 'Surfs Up' - Brian Wilson.
'Nessun dorma' - Luciano Pavarotti.
mhardy6647 02-12-2008, 08:47 AM "Michelangelo" by Emmylou Harris
That is something, isn't it? FWIW, I think that album, Red Dirt Girl, is better than her "breakthrough" with Daniel Lanois, Wrecking Ball. The latter, of course, is the critics' favorite.
Some amazing stuff on Red Dirt Girl.

Shamefully, the only Emmylou I have is a copy of "Heartaches and Highways" that I borrowed from the local library and ripped. I had never heard any of her stuff before other than as a guest vocalist on a few tracks here and there. H&H is one of my favourite late-night-listening-on-the-computer albums now. "Michelangelo" is spine-chillingly beautiful.
levensnevel 02-12-2008, 02:51 PM Suppose that to fully appreciate the talents of Emmylou Harris one should play some of her early vinyl recordings like e.g.
> Luxury Liner (1977)
> Quarter moon in a ten cent town (1978) and
> Evangeline (1981)
cfranz 02-12-2008, 03:22 PM Still prefer the Kingston Trio cover. Unless I'm misremembering or just going senile. Love the song thought.
But still, my all time favorite:
Summer Wind - Frank Sinatra
Even if I am mis-remebering, there's:
This Mornin', This Evenin' , So Soon
All My Sorrows
Raspberries, Strawberries
Scotch and Soda
