I have a question for everyone. Where is the best place to pick up great used transformers for using in DIY tube amps? Will the power trans from old solid state receivers work well for the purpose?

And what about the output transformers? Where can you get them, other than from E-Bay, since I know about it already?

Should one look for old units in need of repair. Will the bigger, more powerful, units have more powerful trans? And are there any with the best reputation, such as the Sansui 1000A, which I hear has some of the most outstanding Iron around?

Also, where does one go to pick up great, reasonable ones?

I'm new to this DIY thing with tubes.

hey-Hey!!!,
The folks at Heyboer TX in Grand Haven MI do both outputs and power Iron for very good prices. They can do vintage designs with modern materials for a fraction of what an original would cost at auction. They can also do modification if your circuit needs special properties.

SS parts are low voltage/high current, and tube gear needs something like the opposite properties. Voltage in the hundreds, and current in the tenths of an amp( or tens of mA ). Generally not what you'd find a tube circuit to fit into.
cheers,
Douglas
