View Full Version : Center Channel Problems (cuts in and out)
brucered 01-11-2008, 10:35 PM i need help, this has been driving my crazy for over a year now. i just saw this board has a MODERN HI-FI thread, so i thought i would ask for assistance.
i have 2 receivers, both JVC. the 1st is a RX-7030VBK, the 2nd is a RX-7010VBK

i am using ATHENA speakers. the 1st center channel speakers is an AUDION series AS-C1, the 2nd is a C.5

http://www.athenaspeakers.com/c5speaker.htm
when i watch DVD's or play CD's on 5.1 or DTS my center channel speaker cuts in and out on dialog. i have tried new speaker wire, i have hooked up other speakers (front / rear speakers Athena AS-B1 & AS-B2) in the center channel position and it still happens, so i know it's not the speakers or the speaker wire.
i am currently running it as surround, but just leave out the center channel speaker and setup the receiver so it is not even there, thus faking surround.
a friend of mine who designs speakers said it is definitely not the speakers and most likely bad wiring in the receiver, does this sound right?
what can it be? anyone? please i don't want to get rid of 2 decent receivers that still work fine except for this problem.
i'm not the one with the problem, other have had the same thing with the RX-8030VBK, which is listed on my instruction manual, so it's the same rec'r with a few extras:

signal-dude 01-11-2008, 11:23 PM Greetings, seems to me your receiver suffers from the same erroneous specsmanship as my Yamaha HT receiver. According to the JVC website your receiver will put out 130 watts RMS? x 6 channels at once. Lets add that up, 130 x 6 equals 780 watts. What is the total draw from the wall socket? 250 watts maybe? Does not add up. So what it sounds like to me is the amps are running out of power. JVC techs check one channel at load and YES it might put out something approaching full power. But put loads on ALL the amps and drive them to full load at the same time and it just poops out.
Same as my Yammie, poops out with 5 channels putting out MAYBE 5 watts each, pitiful.........
Sorry dude, you need a better receiver.
Regards, Marcus

CRAP. actually i need 2. 1 for upstairs and 1 for downstairs.
it happens even if the volume is set extremely low.
so what's the point of a 500 or 600w receiver if the wall outlet is only 250w? would it make a difference if i didn't have anything else plugged into the power bar that my receiver is plugged into?
does this mean i need to buy a 35w per channel receiver in stead?

Oops, sorry. Should have been more clear. Thats what I get for reading the forums after drinking half a bottle of Chardonay,heh,heh..The 250 watts is my guess at what the receiver draws from the AC mains. My point was that JVC specs per channel output at 130 watts @1Khz. is meaningless. As consumers we really don't
have any way to tell how much power these things can deliver.
Now that you mention that it craps out a LOW volume also leads me to believe its much worse than we thought. A question though, what is the ohms rating of the center channel speaker? Maybe the amp does not like 2 or 4 ohm speakers on it. And goes into protection mode and cuts out the sound.
Try putting two 8 ohm speakers in series and hook it up to the center channel for a total load of 16 ohms. Crank it up and see what happens, maybe with a light load it might be happier. As you said its a common problem with these units and I don't think theres anything you can do about it.

brucered 01-12-2008, 10:25 AM they are listed at 8ohms.
but why does the sound only cut out for the center channel and not any of the surrounds? and i don't think it did it right off the bat when i bought the receiver as i would have taken it back immediately. i started noticing it a few years after use.
have i mentioned i HATE JVC.
willyrover 01-12-2008, 10:37 AM I don't think the JVC design would be sophisticated enough that a load problem on one channel would cut out only one channel. Protection would cut all channels.
That said, I don't know what the problem could be. I'd suspect a bad solder joint or connection. Could also be a fault in the decoder.

what are the chances it happened on both receivers at around the same time though?
brucered 01-13-2008, 11:01 PM so if i open it up and don't see a bad solder joint on the center channel connections, i guess i'm screwed and forced to take it in somewhere.
any other thoughts or ideas?
JohnG 01-17-2008, 03:55 PM If it's the same issue I have with JVCs and center channels then don't take it anywhere, it won't help.
I have a JVC 1028 and it's a known issue with the center channel on that era of receivers. My center doesn't cut out, but it sounds thinner and hollower than the right and left with timbre matched Paradigms. When I researched it a few years ago there was supposedly a class-action lawsuit concerning the issue but I never went further with it. I'll poke around for more info later tonight and see what I can find on it.
That being said, I love JVC with their compulink system and it works fantastic in all areas, excellent sound and great features.. except of course with the stupid, idiot, center channel issues. I personally don't run a center channel at the moment due to space issues and therefore love the receiver as is. I'll probably curse it out when I ramp up the home theater in the near future.
brucered 01-17-2008, 11:11 PM thanks for the info, i never knew about the lawsuit. too bad, i have 2 of them from the same era. i'm guessing pretty much any rec'r i get now will NOT have the same problem, regardless of brand/price.
i came across this one for 229CA with free shipping.

doesn't look bad, plus it has a PHONO input which i need.

brucered 01-18-2008, 11:19 AM it's mixed. 1 system has a jvc dvd player, the other is a panasonic. tv's are mixed too. 1 sony, and we are currently looking for a new plasma/lcd.
i'm not concerned about getting matching stuff.

i'm not concerned about getting matching stuff.Oh OK, I was wonderiing because of the Compulink which I'm addicted to; everything is JVC here except the cable box. This wouldn't apply in your case.
Anyway, the Sony looks nice with a lot of features.
brucered 01-25-2008, 02:11 PM i got an email from JVC canada:

the problem is, i have unhooked everything and then plugged it all back in my basement, and i can't recreate the problem. i have a feeling i'm gonna send it back, they won't be able to recreate the problem and just send it back.
thus i'm out shipping cost, time and get the same junky receiver back.
what would you guys do?

As for shipping, if they're admitting a problem on their side then I would make sure they cover shipping both ways.
brucered 01-26-2008, 01:08 AM no i can't recreate it. the other day, i could pop in a cd and it would do it instantly. i think it happens after the rec'r has been used for a while. so i'm gonna pop something in, hit repeat and see what happens after a few hours.
