I recently purchased a B&K generator with classic BLACK plastic front panel. The metal cover was VERY rusted and rust bonded to and stained the front panel on the sides.
What's the best way to remove rust from the plastic?

Meguiars ColouRX works for a lot of staining and discolouration. It's an automotive finish restorer.

Limesol---LIME-SOL is a powerful formula designed to dissolve stubborn lime and calcium deposits, along with surface rust stains from most ceramic type tubs, toilet bowls, sinks, glass, chrome, fiberglass, stainless steel, concrete and shower heads. Use only with clean water, and do not mix with any other cleaning supplies. Dilute as needed, or use full strength for tough stains. Should be able to find in cleaners and degreasers ailse in grocery store or wallyworld:D

Phosphoric acid works, but is pretty rough on people...can be diluted though. CLR might be the same thing, I'm not sure. The acid can be bought at hardware stores, looks greenish, liquid form of naval jelly I think.

Ok.. will see about a photo. We tried lab alcohol at work on Friday but it didn't touch the rust much. I have some Westley's BleachWhite tire cleaner and know how that works. Rust can be a tough stain on plastic.

Yeah.. someone recommended CLR in another AK thread for removing rust stains from a chrome chassis. Does CLR dissolve corrosion on aluminum as well?

You might give your Mr Clean magic eraser a try, they do remove a lot of stuborn materials and not as harmful to your finish.
