Hey All -
Been lurker for awhile but thought I would try getting more active. My first exposure to this stuff was in my high school days in the late 1970s (that puts my age on the high side of 40 for you mathematically challenged). I was a frequent customer of the infamous Pacific Stereo in Berkeley CA. Though memory starts getting foggy I do recall owning some Pioneer, Marantz, Quadraflex and BIC equipment.
I always trusted my ears more than the price tags. Being on limited budgets, it was all I could do. Unfortunately still in the same boat 30 years later when it comes to finances.
After high school I ended up moving a lot so I never really got settled and have never had my "dream system". For a while in the 1980s I would go to the Consumer Electronics show every year and drool over the great stuff on display there...not in the main hall but in the rooms where the small audio companies were located.
I've gotten by for a couple of decades now on mass market Sony and Yamaha stuff (OK, crap) but after discovering this forum and other sites devoted to classic audio I've been intrigued about getting back into audio. Living in Silicon Valley there are a lot of thrift shops all over the Bay Area that I frequently shop at (that's where I get my books too!) and every now and then make a few finds. Of course lots of that stuff doesn't work or once you get home find there are some issues. I'll detail some of my finds in the appropriate threat elsehwere, I'd be curious to see how you all think I might have done.
My musical tastes run all over the place but lately stuff I seem to listen to mostly are female vocals with minimal accompaniment.
Anyway, I'm here hoping to re-educate myself and with luck, make few new friends.
