What do you use to make those? I really like the gold one. Is it julia based? (I only know a little bit about fractals)

Mine? I didn't make it. I found it online. :D I'm not that talented.

I use a free program called Fractal Explorer.

I will check it out. The last fractal program I had was extremely complicated to use.

THis one isn't too bad.. it does take some exploring and some tutorial reading.. but it's about the best free one I've found for ease of use..

You guys make me look terribly boring. :) I use a set of panels keyed to the 10 steps of grey in the Zone system, color matched to my print provider. :dunno: Not exactly stimulating fare for most folks. :smoke:

I like to throw on outdoor pictures also. Using a couple of North Cascades pictures in the New Year, to remind me where I should be instead of sitting in front of a computer.

LOL Windows XP default. The wife uses a B&W of Stonehenge I took while visiting in 2003, With 150+ people walking around the path at circles the stones I managed to take 3 rolls of 36exp with no more then 3-4 people in the shots. By using lots of patients and being ready for the instant. I waited until the people were all behind the stones on the far side of the circle or used tight closeups.

On my photo computer I have a shot of Abiqua Falls a majestic 100+ foot waterfall just 11 miles from town almost no one visits each year due to it being so hard to find. also a B&W shot.

I use a scanned version of an old "Sailor Jarry" tattoo flash sheet. I have been trying to get it done to me but WAF issues have prevented it.

I set both monitors to gray since I do a lot of work in Photoshop and Lightroom. I don't want the screen awash with colors that might throw me off.

My wife, OTOH, has wallpaper from Katamari Damacy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katamari_Damacy) loaded on her machine. Don't buy this game! It's addictive!

Before I started a thread on the subject, I decided to do a SEARCH on the term. Glad I did because some of you have already broached the subject of Fractals. Actually, the "classic" fractal pattern one thinks of when one hears the word "fractal" is actually more accurately called the Mandelbrot Set. That's this one:

http://www.daviddarling.info/images/Mandelbrot_set.jpg

The term "fractal" actually refers to a kind of geometry which, by definition, has "equal detail at any scale of magnification". For instance, the night sky is a fractal shape. You look at it with the naked eye and see a certain number of stars in a certain pattern. Any amount of magnification will bring out more stars arranged in a different pattern. Enough magnification (assuming one has infinite light sensitivity) will look past the stars in our own galaxy and start to bring out other galaxies arranged in somewhat similar patterns to the stars.

Anyway, as to what I use for my desktop background, I have several self-generated patterns I've done with a program called FRACINT (http://spanky.triumf.ca/www/fractint/fractint.html). The only thing I can't do with this particular program is cycle colors. I'm told (by a pop-up information window created by Fractint itself) that I need a "palette-based" video driver. Whatever that is...

I switch my desktop fairly frequently so as not to burn in any colors (even if I do use an LCD monitor, old habits die hard after using a CRT monitor for so many years). Most of my desktops are my fractal designs, but I also use astronomical images I've kiped off the web.

Here's one of my fractal drawings I called "Digital Cauliflower":
http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=98676&stc=1&d=1215655423

This one is "Deep Flower":
http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=98677&stc=1&d=1215655423

And here's a "not mine, but I like it a lot so I borrowed it from the internet": A Hubble image of the Crab Nebula:
http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=98678&stc=1&d=1215656160

I have others, but their file size is way too big to not be rejected by the AK server so I'll stop here.
Yes, you may copy and paste the fractals if you want them:yes:

I use a plain dark blue background. Easier to locate icons that way, and no resources used with a big JPEG or GIF always on the screen.

Mine is currently a map of the Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands. It was a nuclear test site in the 50's, and I was stationed there in 1978 for the cleanup effort. Good times...
