Although I recently had an experience on this site that left a bad taste in my mouth and initially rebuffing the idea, I've reconsidered. After all, it really is too good of an opportunity to pass up. So I'm proud to say that I am going to go ahead and run my planned "Name Those Tunes For Free Tapes" commemorating the upcoming Valentines Day.

The theme?

What else?

'LOVE SONGS'!

Now many, perhaps most songs of this ilk tend to be of the 'hey baby, how can I get in your pants' sappy variety. I usually eschew such songs as being too corny, cheap, and lacking in real emotion. But it IS the number one subject of all time in music. So despite ejecting most sappy songs, I still had to listen to many dozens of songs as I went through my CD's and tapes. Then, I had to play the respective tapes (for filming). The songs chosen are ones that I believe to be genuine and spoken directly from the heart. Not cheap sap. So while you may not agree with my choices for 'best' love songs (you can start a poll for that if you want), what's important here is that you KNOW the songs. Although I should point out that it might be possible to argue at least two of my choices as cheap 'crush' songs, I let the vocal inflection and melody decide for me, which tipped the scale in favor of authenticity.

Anyway, this will be a chance for another lucky AK'er to win some free tape courtesy of yours truly. For the rules, you can search my posted message archive. Of course, at the time of the contest, they will be reposted as a refresher or for anyone participating for the first time.

The contest will be posted on Saturday, February 09, 2007 sometime between the hours of 9AM and Noon Pacific time. This contest is in OBSERVANCE of Valentines Day and not meant to be ON it. I will be with my wife that say. Mark your calendars. Prizes offered will be posted within the next few days as a follow up response to this announcement.

This is scheduled for tomorrow. Yet no one has exhibited even the slightest interest. Should I not even bother? I mean being it's Valentines Day season, I figured why not put some love in the air by A) playing some great love songs and B) showing someone some love by offering up free tape. Hakaplan? You there. This could finally be the one you win. Vinyldavid: you listening? You love the Maxell reels and are just a kid. Surely you would love to add one more to your system. Scorpion...you listenin'? You can never have too many cassettes now can you? Braxus? Isn't it cold in Canada this time of year. What better way to pass the time than by recording some good tunes on some tapes you received for nothing?

Honestly, I hadn't seen this thread until today for some reason, it wasn't coming up on "New Posts". I appreciate the efforts involved, and had fun with your last one. Sorry it seems to be a quiet thread...

I am going to give it a shot, even though I have no use for any tape and probably won't know any of the songs. :D

I liked the last one and would have won if it weren't for my aversion to BRUCE in my youth. I'm bad at love songs but what the heck, I'll play.

Funny, I didn't see this thread until today as well.

Ok cool. Then it's definitely on. Will be posted sometime tomorrow between 9AM and noon (Pacific time). Am still quibbling over what I want the last song to be. The contest will be ten songs, although I chose 12. So two will need to be dropped. No participation was necessary in THIS thread per se; but it's nice to know that it is being anticipated. Originally it simply dropped off the front and down a Black Hole. In the past, at least a few of you would announce that you were gearing up for it. So that's why I was wondering.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
DL-Still wondering who sang "Delta Dawn", the only Delta I'm thinking of is the L-1011 in the avatar above

I did not notice this thread until just now either, and I'm interested

But I cannot tell from this thread how the contest works. How does it work?

Thanks,

Des will post links to ten clips of songs being played on his Teac X-2000M? Reel to Reel deck on You Tube. The Song clips are about 10 second each. The first one to correctly Identify the songs titles and artists will win their choice of one the 12 prizes. You need to post the 10 correct answers in the thread Des starts if you should you figure out all 10.

It is a lot harder than it sounds, although very enjoyable.

I thought you were not supposed to PM him, but rather announce it in the thread as long as you were absolutely sure you had them all right.

Des--clarification on this?

Des_Lab

Correct. I absolutely, positively will NOT accept entries submitted via private message (or, for that matter, e-mail either). I believe in running an honest and transparent contest and as Hakaplan noted, only entries submitted in the form of a public, viewable by all response to the thread will be considered eligible. And as he also noted, I strongly encourage you to not submit a try unless you are sure of the songs. The last thing you want to do is act as a spoiler and 'fill gaps' for someone else and essentially hand them a win. Most of you contest veterans know the drill. But the contest will contain the full rules anyway. Also, the clips for tomorrows contest will be a bit longer than usual.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
DL-The two songs dropped from the contest roster were "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper and "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman

Corrected my earlier post. If you have all ten of the tunes correctly identified then post them in the name that tune thread. :D
