OK...I have a confessions to make.
My DVD player broke a while back, so I started using my original Xbox to play DVD movies and occasionally listen to CDs.
It does a great job with DVDs, but never really sounded quite right with CDs. I started digging into it a bit, and found that regardless of the Xbox settings, it was always outputting 48kHz Digital audio data when spinning CDs. Now I'm no engineer, but even I know that sampling rate converters aren't such a good thing, and ones that take Red Book 44.1 kHz CD and turn it to 48kHz are usually bad AND uneccessary.
The analog outputs sounded slightly better, but c'mon it's the analog output from an Xbox. Not a high deisgn priority.
So now I'm listening through the digital output of my Kenwood DP-990SG and everything sounds MUCH better...ahhhh. My preamp is locking on at 44.1 kHz and the sound is much better...cymbals are back. I missed cymbals.
Might have to look into one of those Oppo DVD players or something soon, cos the Xbox is officially for sale.
