Hi there, what kind of tape leader should I use with my RS-1700 deck to have it detect end of tape? I know it uses an optical system. My tape has a opaque leader that is not detected, should I use a clear one? Unfortunately I don't have the user manual (the deck came with an RS-1500 user manual).

Thanks
Rick

My Teac X-1000R and X-2000R decks use sensing foil. There is a small metal post in the tape path. I'm assuming there is a weak detector current flowing through it. And when the foil hits it, the current is shorted-which trips the deck into reverse mode. So the strip of foil is placed on the tape (usually right where the leader meets the oxide) and off you go.

I'm assuming that your 'optical' system uses a spot beam with a photosensor relay. In which case, instead of foil tripping a detector current, it looks for a break in the tape (where the spot beam is complete and not blocked by the tape) to engage the reverse mechanism.

-in which case, yes. You will need to find and use some clear or nearly clear leader. I have no idea where you would find clear leader tape not attached to a cassette. I know that USR used to sell some opaque red and blue leaders. I would've thoght those would suffice. But if you are already using those and they don't work, you will need to find clear. Or else find out why it's not working (maybe the photosensor cell is dirty?). Or else just use the deck in one direction.

DL-I see you go both ways

USR still sells clear leader. The description says it works with equipment that uses optical circuits. http://www.usrecordingmedia.com/tmecltita1x5.html
