At your budget , I'd like to suggest a route I went and check harmon audio on ebay for a remanufactured Hk 3480-z. The "z" indicating remanufactured. 120 WPC (2 CH) , subwoofer output , fair phono jack not a world beater lol and some other attractive features in a second receiver. Check it out.

Sorry, just noticed that all the receivers you askedabout are HT models.

The Denon listed above would be nice. I have a Yamaha I like MUCH better than the Sony non "ES" model it replaced.Again I wouldn't rule out just about any HK. They are known to rate their output more conservatively than most consumer manufacturers that are stuck in the WPC hype.Just my two cents . Good luck

Sony AVR-1070X. First stereo ANYTHING I ever used. Good sound, I like the look, and cheap, too.

The Sony reciever looks alot like one of my friend's Sony receiver. It's a $199 receiver. Performancewise, my friend is not really impressed with it. He prefer his little older Onkyo that's also under $200 than the Sony.

As for the Yammie, can't suggest anything because I only heard great Yammies above $300. I haven't listened to the lower priced units.

Does it have to be new? For around that price you can get a refurbed CR-1020 from Rob (Merrylander). I was at his place yesterday and there are 3 of them waiting for a refurb. I'd put my money on one of these then anything new under $200. Jack Lord just picked one up from Rob and is rather please from what I hear.

i think i'm gonna pass on all of them right now. stick it out with what i got and save up to buy a higher end receiver.

you have convinced me to steer clear of lower end units.

thanks

These are quite good- Marantz SR3001:

http://us.marantz.com/Products/2090.asp

Very basic, but EXCELLENT sound quality.

The SR4002 (about $599) is even better... plus, HDMI switching and whatnot.

Working at a dealer, I could have had a NAD, or any other of several brands of receivers. I chose Marantz (I have the older model 4600, which the 4002 basically replaced), because to my ears, it was just more dynamic sounding. Not to mention easier to use than most!''

Regards,
Gordon.

I have an HK AVR30, rated 60 wpc, easily keeps up with my 100 wpc stuff, very clean sound. Not 5.1, but considering the Pioneer 5.1 it replaced, it's all good.
