All,

Has anyone any experience with the Sansui 1000A vac tube 40 watt/ch stereo receiver? I'm thinking of buying one instead of a Fisher 500C.

Comments and evaluations appreciated!

Those old Sansui ampe had exellent transformers. I believe my 300Bs outputs are air gapped from a 1000. Going price is around $500 t0 $800 US if it is the one I am thinking about. These were released in Japan only so are pretty rare over here. EL34 PP?

One thing, if this is the amp I am thinking of it is not integrated, so be thinking tube preamp to go with.

Smacks himself up side the head!! Reciever!! Pardon my stupid answer, still they were supposed to be some of the best tube gear built.

Thanx Thatch. I'll probably go for it when I can afford it. I had heard that some people were re-stacking the laminations in the output transformers from these receivers into an E and an I with an air gap to make SE xfmers with good success. I have no plans to cannibalize the one I may get for that purpose however. I think the output tubes are 7591A, not 6CA7.

One of my dad's friends has one that he bought new when he was in Japan.

I moved it to the Exclusively Sanasui forum. You may get more responses here as many die hard Sansui fans only visit this area.

I think Audiophile magazine did a review on the Fisher.

In addition to the general tuning up a tube receiver\amp normally gets are these specific items to the Sansui 1000A...

A) They need shop work to keep from "blowing up" ("oil" caps replaced)
B) NOS output tubes are a little pricey.
C) They run hot, a fan(s) mod. is advised (can be run off the 6.3 heater circuit).
D) A sub woofer connected to the "mono sum" output RCA jack gives EXCELENT results!
E) Phono stage may have more background hiss than you may like, depending on volume level and level on the disk.

I would like to try low noise silicon transistors, but I don't know to bias them, do I change the base divider resistor, emitter resistors or both to get to the 0.6-7 volts needed for silicon VS the 0.2-3 used by germanium?

I am figuring the phono stage is the shielded vertical PCB located at the rear near the AM ferrite antenna.

If so, one could fabricate a new glass epoxy PBC with a completely different circuit or a silicon update of the original (if feasable). This would be the ultimate phono upgrade for this receiver!
