I just had these pieces cleaned and refurbished by a great tech here in Boston. I can't believe how much better these old pieces perform.

I have owned the tuner since 1976. I bought the amp last year.

Those are the TU-9900 tuner and AU-20000 integrated amp, both VERY nice models. Dont forget to give Paul (Morden) the s/n's for his database.

What work did the tech have to do on these units, just basic cleaning or anything more involved? Well, I'm sure now that theyve been serviced, they should probably be good to go for many more years to come.

Ok, on the 20000 he resoldered areas of the circuit board connectors and main amp board where they were cracked or aged. cleaned all switches and controls 3 times and cleaned multi level board layers and back pannel switches and rca in and outs. Cleaned speaker relay. Replaced left channel transistor. Reset proper bias. Tightened all chassis grounds to the circuit board.

The TU9900, repaired circuit foils and strengthened solder. Cleaned all controls and switches and tightened all chassis grounds to circuits board. Cleaned tuner (varicon?)resoldered cracked connection in varicon circuitry. Complete realignment. Washed boards of excessive solder flux, cleaned all trimmer controls. Installed missing hardware and bulbs.

Again, the performance of these units has been improved markedly.

The speakers are Paradigm monitor 3's. Incredible performance for sub $500.00 speakers.

How do I submit the s/n's to Paul Morden?

Tullman:

The repair work sounds typical of what can be expected to be done after all these years. Glad to hear theyve been brought back to 100%. No caps (capacitors) needed to be replaced though?

You can either post a message with the s/n's in a message under the 'Sansui database update' thread which I am certain Paul will see, or you can send him a p.m. on this site (private message).

By the way, I presume the meters on your models have a green-ish glow, not yellow. If your units were still at the shop, it wouldve been good to ask the Tech there about where the correct replacement bulbs can be found, always good to have some spares.

Right now I am using a McIntosh XL 1W, which is a 12 inch woofer in a sealed cabinet with a passive crossover. I am not sure which set up I like better, the one with the sub or without. The Paradigm monitor 3's have pretty good bass their own. I also realize the Mac isn't tweeked to go with the paradigms, so I suspect I would get better performance without the sub, the 20hz capability of the Mac is seductive at the same time.

I was reading off of the service slip he gave me, no where did he mention caps or resistors.

The tech did not change any bulbs in the 20000, which have a white hue. Are the meters in the 20000 supposed to be green?? If so, I can ask the tech to put some of the green bulbs he has on hand in there. The tech did replace bulbs in the tuner. He told me they were not Sansui bulbs, but the bulbs he put in do have a greenish glow, looks good to me.

I'll say it again, these bad boys are working real fine! Yeah Baby!!

Here is another angle which shows the Paradigms. The speakers in the middle are now being used in the bedroom, they are kits from Madisound.
