Hi all-
Went out junkin' today and came home with a bunch of records/tapes and a Pioneer PL-250 turntable. Older silver model, direct drive, weighs a ton. Looks a hell of a lot like my old Hitachi HT-40 TT that I sold. Missing cover, has original Pioneer cart on it with no stylus, cart# PC-135. Seems like a fairly decent table, and works OK; anybody had any experience with their carts? I assume it's made by someone else as an inexpensive original equipment one.

Looks like a nice unit. Reminds me of my Technics SL-1401 somewhat.

I would think that your assessment of their cart is accurate, i.e. get something else on there. Pioneer was fairly standardized with their dust covers, so you should be able to find another without too much work.

I'm envious of you. I miss junkin'. One of the few downsides to my move to the Great White North is a lack of junkin' haunts worthy of my time. It used to be a daily ritual at lunch when I worked in Milwaukee...

Some of the PL-250 tables were sold as part of Pioneer component systems that came with racks, and may not have had a dust cover to begin with.

I guess the junkin' aspect is one benefit of living in a city that's pretty much a shithole. There are thrift stores everywhere here. Look at it this way--you must have moved up in the world. Big ol' thumbs up to ya. Meanwhile here in KC we have a store called Big Bob's Used Carpet. Seriously.
This unit has the pockets for the hinges on the back though, so I assume it had one at one point. I dug out one from a black PL600 that I parted out and I think I can make it work. It may wind up in a rack anyway because my daughter's TT is one of those and it sucks big time. Weighs about a pound; I think I'll pull the Shure off of it.
