Hello All, I'm new to the forum, and indeed new to vintage gear. I was really impressed by the forum - the expertise, enthusiasm and help available out there for beginners like me.

Anyway, I recently acquired an Elac Miracord 46 (Realistic). My problem is the platter is not turning smoothly and it makes a clicking noise as it turns. I know this sounds like a fundamental problem, but I would hope fixable.

I'm grateful for any advice, and feel very much the novice right now!

....ps my login name was supposed to be saint stu but due to my inaccurate typing now reads like 'satan stu' - bad karma? I hope not!

Sounds like dry bearings.

Can you isolate the click by spinning the platter by hand with the unit unplugged?

If I'm not mistaken, your turntable is an idler drive. I'd look at the idler wheel, for hardened or mis-shaped rubber. Perhaps some Rubber Rejuvenator will fix it? Or maybe it's just dirt? A mud-dauber nest on the inside of the platter?

cactuscowboy is right.

It is an idler deck, so remove the platter and look for cracks in the rubber on the idler wheel. Rubber Rejuvenator, and possibly 200 sandpaper (LIGHTLY!) might do the trick. Also, wipe down the inside of the platter rim with alcohol to clean off any dirt or grease.

Thanks Guys, I'll look it over later. The clicking sound - like something was catching on the platter - was what worried me most. I can't see anything obvious when I remove the platter, but then again I'm new to these so perhaps don't know what I'm looking for.

Anyway, I'll try your suggestions and come back if its still causing problems.

Thanks again!
