View Full Version : Which headphones do you take to the Gym? EricC 01-31-2008, 09:06 PM Nadia wants a pair she can run in that will not fall off or are bulky. Sound quality isn't a concern but some of the cheaper small headphones hurt my ears. socrates63 02-01-2008, 12:38 AM I use Koss KSC75 clip-on's at the gym. Most people find clip-on's comfortable but a few don't. They are open so there's no microphonics. You can get them for under $20 shipped, and it sounds better than anything in its price range. In fact, it approaches Grado SR60 performance when properly amped. If sound quality is really not a concern, then earbuds (like what you get when you buy an iPod) can work if they fit well. Just don't get the ones that go inside the ear (IEM, inner ear monitor) because you can hear your footsteps when you run. jpdylon 02-01-2008, 12:46 AM Koss portapro. Small, lightweight, stay on your head, and sound great with plenty of bass --no matter what's driving them. tfarney 02-01-2008, 05:05 AM I'm of the opinion that the only thing to use at the gym is in-ear phones like Etymotics or Shures. Personally, I like the Etys. The in-ear thing takes a bit of getting used to but is, in the long run, more comfortable than most less than full-sized cans. But the important part is that they fit inside of, and close off, the ear canal, providing lots of isolation (20 db in the Etys) so you don't have to crank them up high enough to drown out the very high ambient noise of the gym. No need to go deaf while getting in shape. Tim bordeno 02-01-2008, 06:07 AM Right now I'm using a 20-year old Sony Walkman, playing cassettes. The phones are getting a little tattered, I might try something like the Koss's for an upgrade. I used to say I'd never get an iPod. Now I would say it is possible. Only because I'm spending too much on AA batteries. jonman 02-01-2008, 06:11 AM I like those ear buds with the gel. They are comfy, and in a short while they conform with the shape of your ear canal. By the way, what is a gym? Markw 02-01-2008, 06:15 AM A second vote for the Koss Porta Pro's. JesusChrysler 02-01-2008, 08:12 AM I don't go to the gym. Sorry. :) Matt penkosey 02-01-2008, 05:19 PM By the way, what is a gym? :lmao: penkosey 02-01-2008, 05:22 PM I find that no matter what headphones I wear, the wire is a complete pain in the ass. I'm constantly experiencing the rude surprise of a headphone being ripped off my ear, as the wire inevitably catches on something. Annoying. I've tried running the wire through the back of my shirt, etc. In any case, the wire is always getting pulled... Maybe the thing to do is gather up a bit of slack, and alligator clip it to my collar. I don't ever think to do it, though. ccheath 02-01-2008, 06:07 PM I find that no matter what headphones I wear, the wire is a complete pain in the ass. If that don't work, tape the wires alongside your neck. :D Rodzilla 02-01-2008, 06:49 PM A second vote for the Koss Porta Pro's. the porta pros rock, tho they are a bit bulky by today's portable standard...i first had a set waaaay back in the 80's,i had a koss "musicbox" walkman in highschool...i personally think that was pretty much the pinnacle of cassette walkmans, metal tape capable, dolby b,softouch logic controls, the little koss "safelite" that when used with the porta pro's told you when it was too damn loud,i shudder to think how often that light was on back then[+95 db?]...killer sound quality[well for cassette] and it all fit in the pocket of my jean jacket LOL notasuv 02-01-2008, 08:45 PM I don't go to the gym. Works fine, the charge lasts almost as long as an alkaline. NicoR 02-01-2008, 11:12 PM Why not get a set of rechargeable NiMh batteries?? WalMart (or E-bay) has several brands w/ charger. They are similar to NiMH, but slightly different chemically, I don't know any of the details to how they work. They do work amazingly however. They last longer than plain old duracell batteries, recharge quickly, and have a great shelf life. I used them in my cassette player, and I now use them in my graphing calculator and digital camera, and I must say, they really work well. Also, I hear that if you paint the batteries green, you will get better sound quali.. Oh whoops, I'm not allowed to say that  dread31 02-02-2008, 12:08 AM I don't. bordeno 02-02-2008, 05:45 AM Why not get a set of rechargeable NiMh batteries?? Actually I just realised I gave my wife a Sony charger with 4 batteries along with the Canon digital camera for Xmas. And the camera only takes two batteries, freeing up the other 2 for my walkman. Brent71 02-02-2008, 06:27 AM None. I go to lift weights, not listen to music. :) erniejade 02-06-2008, 11:30 AM 1 3rd the koss porta pros. They seem a bit behind the cell phones but could catch up quickly. There are adaptors available but are clunky. My next iPod purchase will be when they are bluetooth enabled. I'm using Sony MDR-EX71SL and while they sound fine, a lot better than the ear buds that come with iPods, but they have this goofy wire thing and I don't recommend them. chillwolf 02-06-2008, 01:58 PM Gym, what gym? I get my exercise at the bar! :beerchug: merrylander 02-06-2008, 02:48 PM Gym? Gym? That would be the PortaPro. Staying on is one thing, perspiration is another. If you sweat a lot, the pads will get wet. Yuck! Sennheiser has a line of sports head/earphones that I think would work better in a workout scenario. tfarney 02-07-2008, 08:51 AM http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31QKGplTcNL._AA280_.jpg http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-application/exercising/ultimate-ears-superfi-3-studio-white.php On sale, great sonics. My Etys are in fine shape, but the price is right on these and I'm always game for another pair of cans. Tim MAXZ28 02-07-2008, 09:05 AM When I go, I use a pair of Sony MDRJ20's - they clip on and stay on even when I get sweaty.... They're really comfortable too as they rest in the ear and aren't wedged inside the ear canal like many models. http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/7798/headphoneswe0.jpg socrates63 02-08-2008, 04:32 AM How do these sound compared to the Etys? My Etys are in fine shape, but the price is right on these and I'm always game for another pair of cans. Tim I briefly owned the super.fi 5 pro which is closer in price to the Ety ER4P. If the super.fi 3 is similar to the super.fi 5 pro, then I'd say the sonic signature is almost the opposite of the Ety sound. There is an emphasis on the lower frequencies whereas the ER4P's emphasis is on the high frequencies. My favorite IEM is the ER4P as I prefer the more airy detailed sound. Tim I've never heard Etys, but I like the super.fi's. I think socrates63 has a better opinion than I can give. Thanks! John L 02-08-2008, 08:35 AM The Koss Porta Pro is perhaps the best portable headphones for the buck Ever made. They are still pretty much the same as my original ones from the early 80s. However, they are still wired. Now I have an LG phone that has Bluetooth stereo capability, and I have a 2 gig Micro SD chip added to it. Also I have an Southwind, which is relatively inexpensive now, but it has decent quality. However, the Southwind is a Bluetooth version 1, and currently the mainstream is version 2, so be carefull which Bluetooth you get. I suspect a version 3 is already in the tunnel by now, and getting better all the time. One other piece of advice. REMEMBER, there are two classes of Bluetooth devices: Class I and Class II. Your individual headphone will be a class II, which has a short distance reception capability and uses small amounts of energy. But the Class I Bluetooth devices are higher powered and will broadcast over 100 metres. NEVER purchase a Class II device that you plug into your computer. ALWAYS get a Class I for that, because it will reach out much further. Anyway, Bluetooth is the way to go in the future, and I personally like the behind the ear types. |
