Fela Kuti - Expensive Shit

Wikipedia
"Expensive Shit is the twelfth full-length album by Afro-beat pioneer Fela Kuti. It is considered to be one of his best albums, and was ranked #78 on Pitchfork Media's "Top 100 Albums of the 1970s". The title of the album refers to an incident in which the Nigerian police tried to arrest Fela by planting a joint on him. Fela managed to eat the joint which prompted the police to bring him into custody and try to wait for him to produce the excrement. According to legend he managed to use another inmates feces and was eventually released."

Fela Kuti - Expensive Shit

I am a HUGE Fela fan! I have nearly everything he produced that is available on CD. The MCA 2-fer reissue series was great. One of my personal faves is Confusion/Gentleman. The now OOP Shanachie compilation Black Man's Cry is also solid.

Great idea for a thread. I have considered starting this same type of thread myself.

A few other faves:

Where the hell did you find all of these? I've only run across variations of the German/Austrian oompa beer hall stuff. Someone also dropped off a bunch of Scandinavian folk song records at the local SA but they were trashed like a Village People record in 1979...

Where the hell did you find all of these?

In my undisclosed bunker workplace beneath the concrete parts of Texas, I listen to the BBC Radio 3 stream (bandwidth is too good of a thing not to waste at work). There is a particular program called Late Junction (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/latejunction/). They play all sorts of incredible music on the show, and with nothing more than my trusty Swiss Army debit card and the Internets, I go shopping.

My mailman is suspicious. "What in the hell comes in all those little packages from around the world?"

The Schoemner clan got here a little earlier. Bavarian Anabaptists, chased up the Rhine by the Roman Catholics, who then passed the torch to the Lutterans who, by the flicker of fires, encouraged my forebear's passage (what was left of them) to Amerigo's Place.

Then they found the promised land for Bavarian Anabaptists... Texas.

Remember the "Orient Express" from Vienna to Istanbul? Instanbul is considered classically to be beginning of the Orient, from a very Euro-centric worldview (who invented the word "Orient").

I always thought of Constantinople (Istanbul) as the gateway to the Orient due to its unique location. I guess I never thought of it as part of the Orient.

What's the record sound like? What we'd consider Turkish or more East Asian?

Turkish, but a definite sub-set. In some ways, probably closer to the time Istanbul was known as Constantinople. The image on the front is of twirling male dancers with knives in their waistbands. They are what became known in the West as "Whirling Dervishes". Cool schit.

Here's something that's a little different. Box set of traditional flamenco recorded in Spain in 1958 on Hispavox. Comes with a huge booklet that explains the nuances of how each Cante was put together. Virtually unplayed and found on a back bookshelf of a thrift store dusty and unloved.

I got turned on to The Silk Road Project today, and listened to the 1st CD of A Musical Caravan this morning as I'm home sick from work, probably for the rest of the week. CD 2 will probalby be played tomorrow morning.

"The Silk Road Project fosters cultural exchange by uniting artists from Asia, the Middle East and the West in creative collaborations, the fruits of which are presented to audiences around the world."

I guess that qualifies it as "World Music." Yo-Yo Ma is part of the ensamble. I dug it.

Habib Koite- Afriki (Cumbancha). Sweet, soulful music in any language.

I've got Habib Koite's double-CD, "Foly! Live Around The World." If you like Koite's music you may also like the Afrobeat music of Fela Kuti, a.k.a Fela Anikulapo Kuti, a.k.a. Fela Ransome-Kuti. His album "Fela and Africa '70 Live with Ginger Baker is a must have. Its difficult to find right now on CD but if you're into vinyl, I know of at least one used vinyl dealer that may have a mint or sealed original pressing.

I also recommend "Club Latino" by Atmospheres. I don't know why the CD title has Latino in the name because the tracks are all instrumental covers of popular hit Soca and Reggae songs. The songs are Caribbean in flavor but certainly not Latino.

If you're interested in music of Fela, Tower Records seems to be the only retailer right now that has any decent amount of his stuff available, including Live with Ginger Baker. His recordings, especially the more popular or hard-to-find titles go quickly when they become available. All of the other sources are indicating most titles as out of stock or not available. Fela died in 1997 and most of his studio master tapes which were housed at his home were destroyed in a fire. Recordings by his sons, Seun and Femi may also be worth checking out.

LULLABY: A COLLECTION
Various Artists

Music for Little People

Rooted in age-old tradition, Lullaby: A Collection presents an even dozen lullabies from around the globe. Particularly beguiling are the African "Be Still My Child" by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the traditional Spanish "A La Nanita Nana" as sung by Tish Hinojosa, and Bobby McFerrin's "Common Thread," which you may recognize as the theme from the American documentary Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt. Other featured artists include Sweet Honey in the Rock, Judy Collins, Derek Bell, and Loreena McKennitt.

Here's another fine set of music. Two different guys playing an upright stringed instrument called a kora, one acoustic one electric plus bass and percussion...

All Music Guide: 4 stars. "Given his reputation in Europe and his native Guinea, as well as his pedigree, the debut from kora player Ba Cissoko and his group arrives with plenty to live up to. For once, though, all the hype is more than justified.

There's plenty of dance music on hand here; all of it from the Manding tradition, but given a healthy, and sometimes daring edge that makes it contemporary without being deliberately modern. Cissoko himself plays acoustic kora, and his skill is quite breathtaking. But things take a tilt into the unknown when the band's other kora player, Sekou Kouyate amplifies his instrument. While you know it's still a kora, the things he does with it turn it on its head -- it's little wonder he's been called the Jimi Hendrix of the instrument.

The sound becomes totally new, exciting waterfalls of notes that are palpably thrilling. The rhythm section of bass and percussion anchor it all, and keep the groove going quite effortlessly. This is trail-blazing, purely West African music of a kind not heard in far too long, and completely irresistible."

Geez . . this topic was about to go to page three. Is that typical? Well, for those of us who know that beauty is not limited to time and place, here's some soulfood . .

Miguel Povida- Zaquan (Harmonia Mundi France). A young traditionalist flamenco singer. Get a load of the intro to track 7 on Amazon.

Christina Branco- Ulissis (Decca). Lovely sound. Her one song in english, she is a portugese fado singer, is Joni Mitchell's A Case Of You. Beautiful.

hey, pmsummer - sorry, i've been really busy and constantly really tired for the last 5 days. dangled that Angola 60's comp. in front of you and then didn't tell more about it. i haven't listened to it in about 5 years. but is it quite good.

from what i gather, you're more into not-at-all-rockified-or-westernized world stuff - and that's what this is. i don't have the track list. nor do i recall who even gave it to me, but let me know if it is OOP.

also, i fyou are into rockified-discofied-whateverified world stuff, Soundway is putting out some AWESOME comps. i work at a record store and (reffing the 'busy' thing) - i bought their nigeria disco-funk comp. and haven't even opened it yet. arg.

The album was originally released in 1974, but this is the 1989 first CD pressing of Sam Hui's "Games Gambler Play". What it sounds like? A mixture of Stones-like rockers and folk ballads....also contains a cover of Paul Simon's "Mother and Child Reunion" in Cantonese (the lyrics was rewritten to describe water rationing happening in HK at that time....the video is hilarious). The album basically established Cantonese as the dominant language in Hong Kong pop music while introducing rock music with Cantonese lyrics into the mainstream. The album was so popular that that the title track was the first Chinese language track ever played by the BBC.

(Sorry if I've posted this before but it is really awesome. It's a group of 5 fantastically talented vocalists that we were blessed to hear in Russia several years ago and they sang in this small cathedral with incredible acoustics. This is one of those rare occasions where I have some chance of comparing the recording to the live acoustic version. It's all in Russian so while I can transliterate only a few words are recognizable... like Ruskaya and Musika :))

This Ethiopian woman has an incredible voice. She is married to Bill Laswell, and her more recent work produced by him has a somewhat more ambient sound. Zion Roots is a bit earthier. But all of her work is very good.

There was a thread a few weeks back on George Harrison's Wonder Wall soundtrack which made me pull out this oldie. I can't stop playing it. This music was a labour of love for Harrison and I don't remember how it was received at the time but it still has a hold on me. The first track "Govinda" had an almost Moody Blues feel to it and I loved that song so much I named my first cat Govinda. I hope that was't sacrilegious.

My wife, who is from Germany, and her mother, who both came here back in 1970 are from the Saarbruken area. My wifes grandmother is still there. I'll have to have her find out if they have any good Germany recordings of Yesteryear. Maybe I can get her and some of her aunts/uncles to send some over to me. There may just be some very interesting finds.

This may be a whole new area of music genre opened up to me.
Gosh, I hope not. My wife will kill me litterally. I spend way too much on the vinyl I now like :tears:

I'll keep you posted if anyone is interested. Great post by the way, I will be looking into some of these recordings.

Really enjoying this new (to me) find. It seems that vols 1 and 2 don't exist, but I'm happy to just have this one:

World Psychedelic Classics Vol 3: Love's A Real Thing (Luaka Bop)

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c279/riverrat2/psychclassics_.jpg

AMG: "Love's a Real Thing is an excellent introduction into the wild sound world of West Africa in the '70s. As Ronnie Graham points out in his superb liner notes, the '60s were a time of assimilation for much of the popular music of Africa. Many bands were playing a hybrid of Latin and African music typified by the Congolese rhumba of Franco & OK Jazz. The '70s were a different bag, though, with the heavy electric sounds of Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Cream, and others seeping into the consciousness of a new generation of Africans who were also contending with their own emerging sense of identity.

The results are raucous, exuberant melting pots of funky soul, psychedelic rock, and honey-sweet Latin horns mixed through the sensibilities of extremely talented African bands on the cusp of developing styles like soukous, mbalax, and Afro-beat. Senegal's Star Band Number One (aka Etoile de Dakar and confusingly billed here as No. 1 de No. 1), were already seasoned veterans by the dawn of the 1970s, and the sound of their "Guajira Van" with its sinewy fuzz guitar solo and talking drum stabs is glorious proto-mbalax. Elsewhere, there are songs more directly inspired by rock and soul. "Allah Wakbarr" by Ofo & the Black Company has a heavy acid rock guitar lead competing with a conga drum for the top of the mix.

The title cut, "Love's a Real Thing" by Gambia's Super Eagles, is a gritty organ and electric guitar-driven soul number that could have come out of Memphis' Stax Records. One of the later period numbers, William Onyeabor's "Better Change Your Mind" from 1978, is sophisticated Afro-soul riding on an alien keyboard line. "Keleya" from Mali's Moussa Doumbia is the funkiest of the Afro-beat songs on Love's a Real Thing; its chunky organ solo and James Brown grunts beat out the more laid-back "Ifa" from Tunji Oyelana & the Blenders and "Awon-Ojise-Oluwa" from Nigerian studio veteran Gasper Lawal.

There have been other series that have explored Africa in this vibrant and historic period -- the fantastic Ethiopiques, Dakar Sound, and Discotheque discs document Ethiopia, Senegal, and Guinea, respectively -- but what Love's a Real Thing lacks in depth it makes up for in breadth, and the fact that it surveys the whole region rather than a single area makes it a great entry point for them all."

Mercury - Living Presence Stereo 35mm* - LP - SR90310

From the front cover: "New! First time ever: First recordings ever made in the Soviet Union by American technical and musical staff and equipment. Recorded by Mercury on location in Moscow"

I just scored this and some other Russian folk music at the Goodwill -- I think someone gave away their slavic music collection as a number of these have been turning up the last few months, all in pretty well cared for condition. This one still has shrinkwrap on it.

* "An original 35mm magnetic film recording" -- didn't know they did that... sounds quite nice, though!

Really dig the Putumayo stuff--you can get CD's at Whole Foods if you have 'em local.

By all means pick up "Music from the Kabuki" as it is well recorded just as the Koto album...I love these two examples as pure non referential abstract music. The instruments seem to be used to create pure decoration. Ear candy:yes:
