I have a new Denon receiver.The volume control has no markings on it.I am confused as to where I am as far as loudness. It gives a digital reading starting out as -80 db,-54 is just audible,-20 normal and-14 loud. I have no idea as to how loud I can turn it up before clipping.

You should be able to easily hear SS clipping.
