View Full Version : Today's FREE Vinyl score
SpeakerLabFan 02-12-2008, 10:10 PM I answered a listing in Craigslist Free section on Sunday for a couple hundred assorted Free Records, just a couple of miles away. I was second in line but the guy told me he would get back to me when he brought the 2nd batch out of storage. I picked up about 250 records this afternoon - based on the titles he mentioned, I was thinking they'd be mostly The Usual Crap, but I'm happy to find alot of cool and unique rock titles, plus a couple of jazz titles and a bunch of interesting classical. I'm still sifting through, plenty of fun discoveries and some highlights for me so far --:banana:
Brainbox - Jan Akkermann's 1969 band
Focus - Mother Focus (1975, Promotional DJ copy)
Best of Uriah Heep
Blue Mitchell - Bantu Village (Blue Note)
AC/DC, Kiss, Molly Hatchett, Alice Cooper titles
10cc, Hair, Jimmy Buffett, Donovan, Arlo Guthrie, Santana

Rat44 02-12-2008, 10:31 PM Seen that too.Good Score!
SpeakerLabFan 02-12-2008, 11:48 PM Thanks, yeah having alot of fun listening to the Jan Akkerman title - Brainbox. It was in excellent shape despite being stored without an inner sleeve (WTF is with that???), cleaned up perfectly, and sounds great - EMI label, great guitar experimentation, 1969 psychedelic rock n' roll.
Klownschool 02-13-2008, 03:01 AM Nice one!
Rat44 02-13-2008, 03:13 AM Wasn't Jan the leader of Focus?

Hi Rick, yeah I was expecting 100% sluff but there are keepers here (and 3rd or 15th copies of other stuff :) )
Wasn't Jan the leader of Focus?
Yeah, the weird thing is that I ran across a great Youtube video of a Focus performance a couple of days ago and posted it -- http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=148765
...then yesterday in this pile of free records here is this Jan Akkerman '69 LP + another Focus LP that I don't have. :music:

I think you paid too much
hahahahaha
spartanmanor 02-13-2008, 11:19 AM Nice!
Arkay 02-13-2008, 11:23 AM Very nice! Can't complain too much about the price, although I would have been nice if the guy had paid you for helping haul his old junk away, or at least re-imbursed you for the gas.
Just kidding, of course! I'd call that a "score"! :D ]

Yep, Amen and Hallelujah
BroonsBane 02-13-2008, 12:48 PM Free! :ntwrthy:
SpeakerLabFan 02-13-2008, 03:39 PM Yeah free is good! I hit a couple of thrifts afterwards, and it was nice to know I had a car full of records as I was going through the usual crap in the bins. And I did find a couple I didn't mind paying $1 for in light of all the free records - Deodato - Whirlwind, and J.D. Souther's first solo.

I hit a thrift yesterday on the way to meet a couple of friends for dinner and found Souther's first solo effort as well, along with 2001 by Deodato. What are the odds? :D I also picked 2 Brewer and Shipley's and 4 Cactus (well, actually 3 Cactus and 1 Son of Cactus), as well as a live New Riders of the Purple Sage.

Ok, Ashfan - I wonder which Brewer and Shipleys you picked up? I ask.... because I hit a thrift on the way home today and picked up 1 title, and it was Brewer and Shipley - Shake Off The Demon. Weird huh? I grabbed it because they do a cover of Jackson Browne's Rock Me On the Water and this is a 1971 release, so it pre-dates Browne's recording of the song. :music:
I hope you're planning to pickup some good stuff tomorrow. :smoke::D

Apparently it was Shake Off the Demon day. I picked up that and Rural Spaces, both in outstanding condition. Something strange is going on!

Ha, we both have good taste in music.
I have a copy of Tarkio but have to give it a listen and I'll have to look for the Rural Spaces title. I wasn't expecting much but my copy of Shake Off The Demon is excellent too, and a few of the tracks sound fantastic, great Guitar and Rhythm work. :music:
