Hi to all,

I picked up a Dual 504 from Ebay to mess with and I can't figure out how to remove the unit from the base. I want to change the R & L channel cords to better ones etc. as well as some lubrication etc. I DL a service manual but it doesn't show how as far as I'm concerned. Anybody have that model and how to get it apart? Thanks much.

Duals usually have a couple or three hold-down screws from the top. Loosen them--they're fairly large, should be easy to spot--and screw them out until the screw is loose. Note if you keep screwing, the screw threads will re-engage, don't go that far. Once they're loose, they swivel inward and you can pick the plinth off the wood base.

Thanks for the response , but it still will not release. It looks like the suspension, a spring unit at each corner is holding it to the base and there isn't anything that I can see to take it off the springs. Any more ideas? Thanks.

Once the transport screws are loosened, they wiggle side to side. Wiggle them so that the heads point outward and the points aim inward. This causes the disks at the bases of the screws to clear the cutouts in the base.

Sometimes it's a bugger to get them to get to the proper position, ya gotta hold yer mouth just right....

Sometimes it helps to put a flat head screwdriver between the plinth and platter assembly to lift slightly while you free one of the screws from the base. If you just get a small lift on one spot you'll get the idea.

I did it!!! Thanks to all for your help. Damn German engineers. You would think they would have thought of a much simpler way of doing this. Oh well, I got my mouth in just the right position and it worked.

Thanks aga:banana:in,

While you have that Dual opened up you might think about replacing the cheeseball rca cables that the damn German engineers put in there. Almost anything is better than what they used. I was amazed when I changed mine. Audio Technica cartridges work well in Duals. Have fun.

That is exactly why I'm opening it up. I've been snooping around here to see what works the best and there are lots of help. What do you suggest? Thanks.
