Wow,what great looking stuff,Was it a good time,Mike?
Alan
Very good time, if only to finally met the other 2/3 of the "AK brain trust", as well as sampling very nice sound from every room. MikE
Your reply got zapped with the original thread - sorry. Weirdest thing, after so many posts instead of adding another photo/post it would erase the previous photo/post?! So I asked Grump to delete the entire thread. The Cain sub is beautiful, I'm afraid my photos don't do it justice. Brian was selling the Cain speakers/sub at half price and someone [Tony Ho?] snapped up the sub [quick] to pair with his Abby's.

The tubes in the aluminum carrying case are RCA ux245 [45 type] Globes. The ones in the amp are my EML solid plate 45's and the ones in the tube caddy in bubble wrap are National-Union ST 45's. We only listened to the EMLs. Thanks for the comment on the pixs! Here's a better photo of the ux245. MikE

Mike, I'll just post again, Nice Pics!!! :p:
That sign in the picture says the 45 DRD is only 1.8wpc? I would
have thought it would be more. Did you get a chance to run them
along with yours?
Carl
The only tubes I ran were the EML's which are rated at 3.5wpc. The NOS ST 45's are 2wpc and the Globes 1.8wpc. The other ratings listed are for 2a3's which are 3.5-5wpc, again depending on the particular output [2a3] tube. So when we compared the the Yamamoto and the Moth it wasn't really a fair comparision because Brian was using the "stock" NOS ST 45's and many of the differences he noted I attributed to the EML 45. It has a higher rated output and subjectivly sounds even more robust than that. Of course, there were other variables at play as well. Brian was using the Yamamoto pre-amp and when you factor in the design and parts of the two amps it's hard to say what affected what. We did hooked up the pre-amp to the Moth and we both felt it "didn't need it", that it worked just fine in passive mode. MikE

Why didn't you try the EMLs in the Yamamoto?
Jack
PS. Even with DSL, this thread is painfull to open.

Either your DSL is not working properly or you have a slow PC or your PC is not functioning properly, if you have broadband you should have no problems opening these pages ;)

I have crappy DSL(not of my choosing).
Jack
PS. Nobody answered my question.
I suggested to Brian that we could try the EML's in the Yamamoto but for whatever reason we didn't? MikE

Mike,
Thanks for the pics.
Would it be possible to edit captions intosome or all?
About the sub. I loved to looks of it. But I've yet to see anything built by Terry I didn't like! I thought the sub worked well with the Abby's. And I don't usually like subs!

Hi MikE,
Thanks for all of the fine photos! And thanks as well for setting up that wonderful Moth amp of yours in my show room.
Cheers,
Brian
You know, those closeups of the Yamamoto are some of the best [digital] photos I've taken. I feel bad that Luther didn't get a opportunity to show off his fine amp. :( MikE

Well, given that one of my primary goals at AK-Fest 2004 was to show off the new Yamamoto A-08 amplifier - and because I prefer to show off components in their "stock" configurations - I wound up playing the A-08 with its RCA 45 output tubes until around 3:00. At that point, I realized that MikE had been waiting VERY patiently to try his EML-equipped Moth amp with the Cain & Cain Abbys, and I turned the show over to him.
Now, I was informed at this point that the Cain & Cain sub would have to leave at around 4:00 - I had just sold the sub, and it's ride to Ann Arbor couldn't hang around until the end of the show. I suppose that I could have switched back to the Yamamoto amp with the EML 45s at 3:30, but I did not want to short-change MikE, given the effort he put into bringing his Moth amp. And, once the sub was gone (and the sub made a BIG difference!), I did not want the A-08 to be judged in comparison to the sound of the Moth with the sub in place.
Needlesss to say, I am looking forward to getting some EML 45s for my Yamamoto amp - many of the differences that we noticed between our amplifiers MikE attributed to the EML output tubes, and I would like to verify this in my own system. Rest assured that I will post my impressions of the "re-tubed" A-08 in the not-too-distant future.

I don't normally like subs either! But Terry's new design looks to be a killer - and I'm betting that it will work with a wide range of high-efficiency loudspeakers...
