View Full Version : Got any albums with notes such as "to be played at maximum volume" and such?
jeffn 02-16-2008, 04:54 PM Ziggy Stardust has printed on the back cover "To be played at maximum volume"
Prefab Sprouts "Steve McQueen" ("two wheels good" in USA), states "due to the exceptional length of this record, play loud"
Do you have examples of similar or other quirky sleeve comments regarding how you should play the record??
Have several singles with that printed on it. Longer lengths of recorded music on vinyl means lower levels when cutting the record in order to squeeze more grooves into the playing area.
Saint Johnny 02-16-2008, 05:02 PM Off the top of my head.
The Rolling Stones, Beggars Banquet says: This Record Should Be Played Loud.
I have a J. Geils live record that states: Play this record loud!
And I had a record that said, 'made loud to be played loud', but I forget what record that was, at this point.
dr*audio 02-16-2008, 05:23 PM On Steve Hackett's "Please Don't Touch," The notes for the title track say:
"For Maximum effect this track should be listened to as loudly as possible with as much treble and bass as your system can muster - Not to be played to people with heart conditions or those in severely hallucinogenic states of mind."

Yes, I took that myself.
Andyman 02-16-2008, 05:37 PM The Rolling Stones "Let it Bleed" has "This Record Should Be Played Loud" printed on the liner.
Johnny 02-16-2008, 05:50 PM Nirvana - In Utero - Actually has a graphic as to how to set the tone controls. Always thought that was kinda funny. And the settings sound like scheisse.

jonman 02-16-2008, 05:53 PM Johnny Winter-Second Winter, was a three sided album. It was explained they expanded it to three sides to play at maximum volume.
similost 02-16-2008, 06:02 PM I got an album somewhere.. can't remember who it is.. but it's a white cover, and in big black letters across the front it says STEAL THIS ALBUM (or maybe record) Does that count?

Forgot who did that LP, always wanted one.
dmusgrave 02-16-2008, 06:33 PM Ziggy Stardust has printed on the back cover "To be played at maximum volume"
I couldn't stay in the same room if I followed those directions precisely, but I've been known to crank the Bowie pretty high :music:

When I taped that off the radio, they said the same thing. never knew that that came from the back of the LP.
Drybasement 02-16-2008, 06:45 PM The Rolling Stones "Let it Bleed" has "This Record Should Be Played Loud" printed on the liner.
Yeah baby. And well deserved.
Cheers
Elfasto 02-16-2008, 06:48 PM Twisted Sister's "Stay Hungry" cassette:
"For maximum enjoyment the potentiometer in the preamplifier section should be set to minimum resistance for maximum volume and enjoyment.....in other words: PLAY IT LOUD MO*********RS!!!"
Or something like that....been a while since I read the liner notes.
abpeep 02-16-2008, 07:45 PM Wasn't that admonition to play loud on the first Butterfield Blues Band album as well?
Alan
ampegdan 02-16-2008, 08:55 PM Yeah baby. And well deserved.

Amen. :ntwrthy:
shocley 02-16-2008, 10:19 PM On the Pretenders' first album, there's a note on the record sleeve:
This album has a longer running time than most average LP's therefore to achieve maximum effect PLAY THIS ALBUM LOUD
groovemaster 02-17-2008, 12:44 AM The Rolling Stones "Let it Bleed" has "This Record Should Be Played Loud" printed on the liner.
I second that!:thmbsp:
Andyman 02-17-2008, 12:50 AM Wasn't that admonition to play loud on the first Butterfield Blues Band album as well?
Alan
Indeed!!!
"We suggest that you play this record at the highest possible volume in order to fully appreciate the sound of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band"
truetone36 02-17-2008, 12:50 AM "This record should be played loud" is on the cover of Mountain's "Climbing" LP, and of course as a teenager I did just that as often as I could.
Dumont-First with the finest in television.

System of a Down?
Cpt.Beaky 02-17-2008, 02:57 AM I've got a number of CDs - mostly from the early to mid 90s - that specifically mention that they have have been mastered in such a way that they recommend listening at particularly high levels. I'm fairly certain that The Cure's Disintegration was one of these, perhaps some The Smashing Pumpkins.
I guess that was back when CDs had dynamic range :(
Strangeband 02-17-2008, 09:24 PM On the cover of Graveyard Shift by Scott H. Biram listeners are told "This record sounds best when played LOUD!
Just the opposite of most of the things here, I have several Telarc CDs with this warning in the booklet.
"Telarc Digital Compact Disks, especially those containing substantially wide dynamic range, will present an extraordinary challenge to all stereo systems. Certain components - even the finest - may have problems with the most demanding passages. Damage could result to speakers or other components if the musical program is played back at excessively high levels."
And another warning in one of them.
"WARNING! SPECIAL SYNTHESIZER INTRO & CLOSING. Lower levels are recommended for initial playback until a safe level can be determined for your equipment."
Best part is, they aren't kidding.

have you heard the PDQ Bach CD? :D or READ the pamphlet?
JesusChrysler 02-17-2008, 10:48 PM Similost:
It IS System of a Down's 2nd album. I have it as well. Double-viynl-picture-disc is good as well. ;)
Back on topic; I have Audioslave's DVD w/all of their videos on it; and "Show me how to live" has the words "Play Loud" for about 2 seconds before the video starts.
:)

spiderhead69 02-18-2008, 01:26 AM Frank Zappa - Lumpy Gravy. One the inside of the gatefold there is a note on the right side that says: Note: Listen to side one first AND TURN IT ALL THE WAY UP !!!

My copy of Beggards Banquet doesn't have that. But what it does have is on the inside when I open the album, the picture of the Stones at the table was glued inside the album upside down. My copy is on the London Label PS 539. Anyone else have it this way?
twist72 02-18-2008, 01:45 AM I have two LPs by Colour Haze on the German label Elecktrohasch. They're a stoner rock band from Germany and both lps have this on the back:
"This is an audiophillic all-analogue recording without any additional compression to give you full dynamics and the most true sound reproduction! Therefore: PLAY LOUD!"
They are serious too! This kind of music MUST be played loud to really get the full effect and emotion behind it. Otherwise it is just so much lo-fi noise. These guys are HUGE in Germany BTW. I wish they would tour the US.
dmusgrave 02-18-2008, 02:01 AM When I taped that off the radio, they said the same thing. never knew that that came from the back of the LP.
So do you like Bowie David? If so... that kinda offsets the John Denver thing in my book :thmbsp:

I like and enjoy a VERY diverse range of things....
just played John Denver's Greatest, and then Culture Club, and then Cats soundtrack, and Romeo and Juliet Soundtrack during the night....:D

Now if you'd played The Fall between Cats and Romeo and Juliet THEN I'd agree it was diverse :smoke:

Who's The Fall?
Oh yeah, a Hammered Dulcimer tape in the mix, too!

MY BAD!
For some reason my fingers typed, 'Beggars', but my brain thought I had typed, 'Let It Bleed'. Go figure. :scratch2:
I must be older than I think.:tears:

pilotputz 02-18-2008, 10:08 PM I'm a little ashamed to admit that I know this, but the first Vinnie Vincent Invasion album has "MADE 2 B PLAYED AT MAXIMUM VOLUME" written on the inside cover.
Admittedly not the best album of the 80s.
circus2000 02-19-2008, 04:55 AM At least on release by Irish indie band Toasted Heretic stated clearly "Please play at the maximum volume consistent with listening pleasure". Sensible advice I'm sure you'll agree.

Its a Steve Albini production isn't it? And he's generally all about the harsh trebly sound. He's against a good rounded bass sound because either:
a) Its a corporate rock sell out and betrays the music or
b) he's woman hating misogyanist and bass is too female as opposed to the more masculine sound of agreesive harsh feedback.
Your choice.
RichPA 02-19-2008, 05:13 AM From the liner notes to Jeff Beck's great album "Truth" -
"Shapes of Things - Rearranged, but the same Yardbirds hit. This must be played at maximum volume whatever phonograph you use. Makes very appropriate background music if you have Vicar over for tea."
Handlebar 02-19-2008, 10:35 AM I can still hear my grandma yell "turn it up" when Woolly bully was on..lol
couldn't turn it up loud enough for her..

OscarEmmy 02-25-2008, 01:25 PM Johnny Winter-Second Winter, was a three sided album. It was explained they expanded it to three sides to play at maximum volume.
Great album - and the fourth side - smooth and blank - is perfect for accurately setting lateral arm bias!!!
Jack Lord 02-25-2008, 01:30 PM B-52s' "Wild Planet" says Play Loud.
Boston's first LP has some notes where the writer keeps repeating, "Listen to this record!" with ever-increasing enthusiasm.
