....there, I said it. I feel much better.

I'm pretty amazed at the sound quality of some of his recordings. Years ago, my wife bought me the ND CD box set "In My Lifetime" and today I gave it another spin. I'm glad I did this. :thmbsp:

Nothing wrong with the big D.

My brother was a big fan starting at age 6. He's seen him about 5 times live.

I didn't like him because when I was a kid, it was all my mom listened to... but I ended up with a bunch out of lots of albums I've bought, and some of his stuff is really great.. I've got probably 7 albums or so, and have listened to about half of them.. I've got no shame saying it now either..

Ain't no surprise.

Actually the one that slays me is Forever In Bluejeans (Babe).

Most of his classic stuff was recorded at American Studios in Memphis. For another example of a great tune and sound from the same studio, give "Hooked On A Feeling" by B.J. Thomas a spin.

I like his earlier stuff. He lost me with the Seagull album. Seems like he went kind of shmaltzy after that

Neil's the MAN!! What an amazing songwriter.
He seems to have a good sense of humor about himself as well. He's a hoot in the movie, Saving Silverman.

I think that it's okay, today, to listen to Neil. Compared to what is going on out there today he is pretty interesting. Neil always surrounded himself with good sidemen; two of them from our own Saint Louis and Ronnie Tutt is always a pleasure to hear. I have seen him at least four times live and have most of his music. Don't be shy about Neil; let him be the shy one.LOL

Neil Diamond's music exists outside the judgements of good or bad. Robbie Robertson tried to make him cool. Rick Rubin tried to make him cool. The Diamond sneers down upon your mortal notions of "cool" and "uncool".

Not a fair comparison, Barry just sings, Neil has written some great songs. I have a super disc of his and the JLS album. I have no Barry Manilow.

P.s. Neil would kick the s..t out of Barry.

I've got more Diamond on R2R.

My father-in-law gave me quite a collection of R2R tapes.

I was looking on artist's web sites recently. Neil Diamond isn't touring and has had nothing on his "news" page of his web site since 2006.

I am wondering if he is having health problems? Anybody know anything?

PS: I think Manilow is also a writer. After all he wrote the songs that made the young girls cry. :lmao::lmao::lmao:

I've some of Neils offerings in my stacks. I like his hits for sure and then some of his not well known material. I like the songs he's written for others as well.

too much of him in a marathon can get to be over the top

I like his vocals. In high school I really liked "Song Sung Blue". Not sure why but it kind of stuck on me for some reason. No shame in admitting we like his work.

THE JAZZ SINGER!

America's my favorite Neil Diamond song...EVER!

CAn't believe I am hopping into here to defend Barry Manilow, but the boy did write a good number of his big hits. I always found it kind of ironic that he did not write "I write the songs". We have Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys to blame for that one.

I would have to think that it would be Sherman. If memory serves me correctly I believe he became some kind of a cop after his singing career was over. Ahhhh.. the old days of bubblegum pop :D

Man, I've never seen that before. That was really ugly. I can't say I blame Danny, if someone jumped me like that I would probably have done worse. Still, one was an idiot and the other was obviously drunk.

Confession time. I, too, am in the "I'll deny this if confronted with it, but in fact I have several Neil Diamond recordings and I like 'em" camp. I can remember when he was "cool" enough, almost like John Cage, and don't know exactly how or when it became "uncool" to like his stuff, just that it did. But for me, not only do I think some of his music was good, it also brings back a lot of nostalgic memories. Some of his songs were just part of the "soundtrack" of growing up. That said, I don't like all his stuff, just some. "Song Sung Blue" never did much for me, but stuff like "Brooklyn Roads" for all its syrupy sadness, I still like, and "Cracklin' Rosie" and "Sweet Caroline" remind me of some of the happiest moments of my life. He'll be rotating around my playlist now and again, probably until I die.

That song was still working magic for the younger generation in '99 dude :)

That and Red Red Wine are as far as I follow Mr. Diamond, but I don't blame him for that as much as me just not having heard the right stuff.

I think his best stuff is his least well known,He was truly awsome in the Jhonathan Livingston Seagal soundtrack,I wish he could have done more with this unusual style of music as it was very deep and heart moveing.

I think the movie THE JAZZ SINGER killed his career and made him a joke,The movie made him a sory Elvis looking vegas wantabe geek.

And Neal Dimond has never been a "Jazz Singer" but some how they had to market the movie.
His style is cool and differant in his own right he is an origanal and I don't care if others dislike him as I was laughed at for years for likeing Tom Waits when I had to speacial order his lp's in the 80's and 90's and no one knew who he was now when I go to the record store all the young kids like him.
Neil Dimond will be huge after his death and people will say I always loved his music yada ,yada,yada.... So sad they didnt try to make a movie about the real Neil Dimond and honer some of his early works and tipofi on his real personal life insted of makeing a bad Joke out of him.

I, one day around 1976, woke up and started really liking Neil Diamond. Up to that point I was mainly into top 40 music and had a modest Elton collection. My step-mom had "Hot August Night" in her collection, and that pretty much did it. That was the point I associated all those familiar songs on the radio with the artist. I also admire his songwriting abilities and all the different artist that have recorded his music. I have been to two of his concerts (Greeensboro, North Carolina - 1982 and Evansville, Indiana - 1998). He will always have a prominent place in my music rotation.

Hot August Night - I'll say it yet again. the best live album ever. Period.

Has anyone ever topped:
Porcupine Pie
You're so Sweet

And if you don't get weepy at:
Done too Soon
Morningside

You're just not human. We used to have several such pieces we'd put on the juke box to calm down the drunken bikers.

I like some ND stuff, and actually used to play some when I DJ'd college radio 1970-72, BUT he wrote the worst lyric of all time in "I Am I Said" --

I am I said
to no one there
and no one heard at all
not even the chair

What? He's too tired to actually find a rhyme for "there", so he looks around the room, sees a chair, and uses that? Terrible, terrible.

And the cover of Hot August Nights -- well, let's just say it looks like ND is miming something most men only do in private. Yikes!
