Ortofon 2M Bronze - anyone have one yet and how does it sound? It's caught my eye if my odyssey with AT does not work out? :scratch2:

I just read the specs on all of them. I would love to know someone in Canada that will sell them.
Here is the cartridge in this discussion:

I have the 2M Blue that I bought from Sound Hounds here in Victoria BC for $220. They're good guys, and even installed it for that price. It's probably made the most significant improvement in sound over any other thing I have added to my system.

I'm not speaking from experience, but it's probably a safe bet that the Bronze would be an upgrade from the AT cart. If nothing else, IMO it's the best-looking in their new 2M lineup! I think you should get it so we can all read your thoughts.

Was just talking to the guys at my fav audio store yesterday, and they got the 2M series in a couple of weeks back. They actually seemed surprised by how good they are. Huge step above the OM's.

I sure would like to try one, but it won't work on my Thorens TP62 arm wand.

I carry the 2M series. The red uses an elliptical bonded stylus, the blue uses a nude elliptical stylus, and the bronze uses a nude fine-line stylus.
The bronze is an upgrade of the OM Super 30.
The bronze (or the super 30) contacts the groove walls a little deeper than a standard elliptical tip. Also the moving mass is less. This allows the diamond to touch fresh points on the vinyl, as well as respond to subtler groove modulations.

The Bronze is a very good cartridge and a big step up over the old OM series.
However, if you can save a bit extra, the 2M Black is the real star of the range and an absolute giant killer!

When I read some of the vinylforums here i EU, I have noticed that some think that they are a little to heavy and there is also a little surpriceness that they switched to a Shibata tip on the 2M Black.
Ortofon has comment this with that they do not think that their Shibata is inferior to the previous VdH on OM40.

I'm thinking you'll do that because I trust your opinions and you would be a better tester - more discriminating ear and all :)
Yeah, the reason I'm interested, is that I'm sold on the fine-line or line contact styli. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best thing since sliced bread. That deeper contact is the saving grace for thrift store vinyl :)

I can't, because it won't work with my Thorens headshell, and my Pro-Ject is all kinds of tied up with the new Grado. Otherwise I'd think about it. But in all seriousness, I doubt you'd be disappointed.

I just updated the AT odyssey on the 440 Hum thread. I have a note in with Fred to see if we can make a 2M Bronze work out for my JVC. If so, I'll be going this way by summer - maybe sooner. I'll keep you posted :)
