now, I know this is awfully vague, but I'm buying some new Cerwin Vega VE-12F's and I want to get a separate amp for them. I currently have a Yamaha rx-797 (using it to power two JBL L100 Centuries) and I don't want to stress it by sticking two very power hungry CV's to it... So, what im looking for is a stereo amplifier with 100-200 watts per channel at the lowest cost possible while still having enough clarity and imaging to give someone with no audio experience at all a "semi".

I was thinking about...

Art SLA2
Crown 202D
Rotel...
Cambridge...
NAD...
Sunfire...
McIntosh...

Extra qualifications: I want to buy it new... and for it to be sexy :puke: :D

What ya got experience with?:scratch2:

If I were mating a Mac with any speaker, it would not be Cerwin-Vega. If all you want is high efficiency, boom and sizzle fine. Attributes like clarity, imaging and sonic refinement you're not going to get with C-Vs; their primary feature is the ability to play loud. The company makes no bones about this in their advertising. I've owned three C-V models in the 1980s (D-9s, 380SEs and AT-15s) so I would like to think I have some idea what I'm talking about. Nevertheless, a Mac may help tame the treble and upper midrange roughness I experienced with the brand. Just my $0.02.

Cerwin-Vega speakers are typically the antithesis of power hungry.

C-V in general are very sensitive speakers - meaning they get loud with not much power. Afaik, they don't have any wildly low impedance swings.

My guess is that you'll be surprised at how loud they will play with your current receiver.

Mc Intosh is waaaaayy too expensive for moi!

Your saying I shouldn't worry about another component, whoaru99?
huh...
btw the sexy thing was a joke :D

and, Trust me imaging with an rx 797 is amazing compared to the yamaha i was using before this... 1974 something or another.Even some modern day (1991) KLH's have imaging with this thing, at least to me :thmbsp:

ok thanks

Ohh and, Would it be better to buy something similer (respectable Bass, and sensitive) to the cerwins in the same range of mulah?

With those Cerwin Vega's all you need is 50 watts per channel......

Yes. That's my opinion.

You can always add an amp later, but as I said before, I doubt you'll need one with C-V speakers.

I know ive owned CVs that were 104db i think with 15" woofers one of the E series and with that lil $40.00 40wpc receiver it would make you cry or cover your ears or both.

Friend of mine owned a pair of CV's in the 70's (15" woofers), drove them with a 60 watt /ch citation 12. Got Plenty Loud

I agree, you don't need much to drive them to ear shattering levels. Why not have someone build you a gainclone or build it yourself?

Here's a review on an over the top one at 6moons -

Audio Sector Gainclone (http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/audiosector/patek.html)

They perform great too. I have been rethinking my amplification needs and one (or more) of these is going to find its way into my system eventually.

Just a thought.
