Picked up an MR-71 turner a while back. Until recently I’ve only used it casually. Now that I have a full Mc in my office, I’ve pressed it into regular service – 6-8hrs per day. With a couple of tube swaps, the unit appears to work flawlessly and is in original condition.

I have concerns using something that’s 40 yrs old as a work horse.

Is it safe to use the unit this way or should I have it sent in to re-capped etc. I notice that both Audio Classics and DeWick repairs do this sort of thing. Any idea of the cost of having the unit tuned up? Love the warm vintage sound, don’t want to change that. Just want to have a degree of confidence that it won’t catch fire if I leave the room!

My experience with these is that there are usually one or more sections of the multi-section cap that are dead and the voltage after the selenium rectifiers can be lower than spec. Both of these problems can impact the operation of the tuner.

If it was mine, I'd schedule a trip to Terry's for a tune up - it made a big difference in my '71. Contact Terry for a general idea of the cost. :thmbsp:
