I bought a used dvp-s7000 player on eBay recently due to the praise for it on here and think I really got screwed. The seller (who can barely speak english) claimed in the auction and through email that it was in perfect working condition.

I have it setup now and it has about a 2% success rate of reading discs (cd or dvd). When I insert a disc the display usually immediately turns to the 'no disc' default display. Sometimes it attempts to read it for a few seconds. Sometimes it actually works (once it recognizes a disc it is fine.)

Any thoughts on what the issue may be? I don't think it is the lasers themselves as I believe the player uses separate lasers for CD and DVD and it has problems with both. It must be some mechanical issue but I don't want to start fiddling with no direction. Thanks for the help

I cracked open the case today to see what I could find. This unit has two lasers; one for cd and one for dvd. When you put in a disc, the player gives it a quick dose of red (cd), then the other, and if it doesnt recognize the disc, it gives up. As you can see in the pic, the white screw seems to adjust the height of the lasers which I thought might help. I raised them as much as I could. It might have helped slightly, or it could just be my imagination. The player still has a pretty low percentage of success on reading discs.

I really don't know what the problem is, considering it has issues reading both cds and dvds. DVDs it pretty much never plays. Anyone need a spare player for parts?

Have you tried cleaning the lenses...?

Another thing that goes kaput on late-model players is the spindle motor. You might try applying sparingly a light machine oil to the shaft on top of the motor. Also some contact cleaner and lube at the back of the motor where the brushes are can make a difference. If so you might be able to enjoy some reliability, but it would be temporary, and the spindle motor would have to be replaced before too long.

I imagine finding some new lasers for it should not be that hard (but don't quote me on that, since this player isn't the newest anymore). I bought some NIB ones for my DVP-NS900V and DVP-S725D that had similar problems, very cheaply online, and installed them myself, recalibrating through the service menu.

You could try to recalibrate now to see if there's any improvements (to get into the service menu, google, don't remember the combination on the remote), but in my case that never did anything, lasers were just shot.

KHS-180A is the one to look for if I'm not mistaken.

Can you explain how to do this in detail please? I have always wanted to do this myself but didn't want to destroy the players.

I use qtips, rubbing it very gently with circular movements. No water or alcohol (especially alcohol stuff can damage some lenses). Worked wonders for my CDP-X777ES.

I've always used isopropyl alcohol and foam tip cleaning aids. The plastic used should come to no harm if the alky is used sparingly and not allowed to linger for any length of time. Dampen the tip with the alcohol and place gently on the lens and twirl gently by running the cleaning stick between thumb and forefinger of one hand and use thumb and forefinger of other hand to keep it guided in place. No rough stuff. Don't push down with excessive force, or apply much lateral force, as the suspension for the optic assembly is very delicate. I've used this method with success for years. But newer units may have different construction techniques used, requiring special consideration. Others may differ, and I welcome their point of view. But it works well for me in this area where the predominant heat source is a wood stove in most homes.

There are also laser cleaning discs available, that direct the pickup to a brush affixed to the rotating lens. But I'm not too keen on the propect of their effectiveness.

Oh man!....I was one of the people who reco'd that unit. Sorry to hear you got a bad one. As mentioned, if you can find the parts used perhaps that's an option for repair....but if not, don't let this one bad-apple spoil your experience. The DVP-S7000 is a great unit IF it's operational. I hate to say it (goes against my recent rant's on our disposable society), but since they are so inexpensive now a days, maybe just pickup another one and forget about the first?

Thanks guys. I have a few nice dvp and cdp's that will benefit greatly. You are too kind!
