So I have had my Luxman R-117 for almost 20 years now and its been very good to me. Currently I run with a speakerlab bandpass dual 8 sub box and then to some a/d/s satellites.
Every so often the pots need some deoxit to settle down some crackling and it goes away for a few years. Now however I have my left channel crackling on and off. Ive swapped out speakers, sources, changed to speakers A then B and the same left channel just drops in and out. Seems to happen more when everything is cold, and then goes away when its all heated up.
Is there something more I should do with deoxit or send it in to the only repair place in town (and they know it)

I have that same receiver.I am no expert but the scratchiness in the volume pot seems to be a thing with these receivers.Mine does it at about eleven o'clock on the dial.Yours appears to be a lot worse.Good luck with repair because I don't know if the have parts for these units anymore.
That's an older unit and you should probably replace the power supply caps .
It may need more but I would start there and they are cheap.
I own A TP-117 and its been a great unit so far so I cant really say about the receiver version but the weakest link is usually the power supply section.
Try the caps for 8 bucks and see. if not then you might want to identify the preamp board and replace the capacitors in there.
It sounds like a capacitor to me.
Good luck.

Sounds like a bad cap to me as well. The R-117 Lux is great piece, somehow I ended up with three of them, 2 working and one my tech is trying to bring back to life....he calls it "a dog on the bench". I guess when he hasn't had enough frustration for the day he pulls out my R-117 and keeps pluggin' away at it.
IMHO, if you can get it fixed it IS worth it. I'm more than pleased with the performance of these R-117's, and the build quality.
Good Luck.

Anyone know where I can pick up an owners manual for the R-117? Hopefully a free download or a copy that I would gladly pay the shipping and any other costs that might be involved with copy.

Thank you for the link to Hi-Fi Engine, but, I have already downloaded this service manual. What I really would like to find is the owners manual.
Thanks again, Tom

Hi beemer, I got a R-117 that is in need of some TLC and looking to find out who has the skills and parts to do the job. Any info on what it takes to bring one of these oldies but goodies back to life would be much appreciated.

rWelcome to AK.
What part of the world do you live in? Location is kind of crucial, if you don't want to pay high shipping costs or would like someone local.

I live in CT. I heard of this place in Litchfield, CT called Approved Audio Service. I dropped them a line asking if they had much experience repairing Luxman R-117s and what their workload was like. They emailed me back saying they do a good bit of work on the 117s. They also said they had about a 5 week backload of work. I don't know if I want to wait around that long to find out if the receiver is salvagable. Have you heard any feedback about the place?

update:
well its been in the shop for a few months now...something about a part needed to be ordered. I just checked their website, the shops, and they are now out of business. So I am trying to get the R117 back and see what if anything they have done to it.

Well that totally sucks.
I don't know what your next move is on that.
Is anyone there still answering the phone?

No they've shuffled everything off to a ISoldIt ebay thing which is ominous. Its sad because i left a deposit and may not know if anything had been done to fix it or not. Someone bought the business a few years ago and i guess it wasnt the cash cow they were hoping for. Its also sad because they were pretty much the only game in town.

First thing I'd do is contact the ISoldIt via registered letter and inform them you are the legal owner of the Luxman and that it was in for repairs at the shop and not abandoned property. Next is contacting the owner of the shop who had it in the first place and ask what your recourse is. If they are not cooperative, I am not totally sure what the next move is but I'd bet small claims is a good place to start. I'd try and find some free legal advice on this and definitely hang onto your claim check. However, have you been to there site lately? The above link shows this -
"and provide your claim check number and phone number. (Your claim check number is a six digit number starting wtih "20" on your claim check.) We will contact you and make arrangements for pickup."

i've called them three times now and each time theyve taken down my info and promised to go look "in the warehouse" It hasnt been sold on ebay in the last 60 days and isnt on there currently. If its gone its because the employees fleeing the sinking ship cherry-picked the best stuff on their way out the door. My next step is to go visit them late this week when i have free time during the day. Its like show me your warehouse and I will find it in 30 seconds. Also my drivers license is carved into the back.
(and i still have the ultra rare remote!)
