Thanks for the help from the MDF thread. I ended up with my best finish yet! I used a couple of the sugestions such as sealing with shelac and multiple base coats with sanding in between. I ended up brushing with a good quality lacuer brush and that did wonders.

They are "sort of" because they don't use the same woofer and tweeter. The woofer is as close as I could match with Re and Le. I ebayed the crossovers, midranges and 050 Gold tweeters. The 6 1/2 upper bass drivers I canibalized a pair of L20.

The cabinets I took alot of liberty with on the design. Nothing like the original although I did preserve the driver spacing, time alignment step and minimum baffle approach. They were well worth the effort. They sound very good and have great dynamics.

You got quite the sheen going there! How many layers of laquer did you end putting on? I will soon be coming to the coice of painting or veneering on MDF.

The finish is painted semigloss black. I would have tried to vernier but all edges have been rounded with a router. It has 4 coats total. I sanded after the primer and then again on the first coat. The last 3 were not sanded but painted like varnish with a good brush. I alternated brush direction with each coat to help hide the brush marks. Up close you can still see brush marks for the last coat. I guess I could clearcoat them to hide them but I am happy the way they are now.

RobH,

You did a really fine job on those! I'd love to hear 'em.

What did you end up using for crossovers? In your setup that looks like a demanding job.

Hi Rob

I got very lucky on the crossovers and 3" titanium midrange drivers. The same guy put up NOS for both on E-Bay and I won both auctions. I have been curious about them for a while and jumped at the chance to build a pair. Those crossovers saved me a fortune in parts and heartache. Crossovers are a real B***H to get right as I am sure you know. Even with the schematic the inductors are a tuff match. Without knowing the wire gauges or types, cored vs. air, the DCR is a real guesing game. So you never really get it right compared to the original stock crossovers. There are 45 caps coils and resistors in each crossover plus switches and the biwire/biamp terminal strips!! Never would have even tried without the NOS crossovers.

RobH36345427...nice job!

really like the way they turned out. So...how do ya like the sound compared to other speakers you own or have listed to? The midrange driver looks like the diaphragms in my 2441's.

well...just wanted to say congrats!

oh...what do you have them crossed at? I'm kinda curious

The diaphrams are very much like a 2445 just smaller. I like them. They image well and sound very open and very dynamic. They sound like my bigger mains at normal listenning levels. I like them better than my L100's , L80t3 and L3.

They crossover at 300hz,1.1khz and 4.5khz

What are your plans for the 2441's?? Are you going to go with the Salad Bowls or try a modern BiRadial/CD horn on those bad boys??? I am using 2344a in my mains and that is one awesome horn!! Won't work on a 2" driver but they make Flat Front Biradials that are similar. You have TADS too? You make up your mind on biamping??

What are my plans...wish I knew...hehe :p

The 2441's are going on the salad bowls...above the JBL's will be a Fane tweeter...the TAD's are the 15" woofers...they'll go in a sealed enclosure.

I will be bi-amping...I pretty much got to. The sensitivity of the JBLs will be brought down to 106 db to match the tweets...and the sensitivity of the TAD woofers is 97db.
Tho...I still am not sure what to do for the active cross-over...I may just pick up a used one off ebay...don't know :dunno:
