I have a 65 inch Sony (DVI only)
A PS3, and an older yamaha surround receiver (No HDMI).

Is there any way to use these products together or should I buy a new receiver with HDMI?

Its a 3rd room, so I would prefer not to buy a new TV.

Thanks for opinions.

It depends on what you want out of your PS3.

If you want lossless audio formats, you will need a new receiver with HDMI inputs (preferably HDMI 1.3). Of course, if you did not need lossless audio formats, you could get an HDMI to DVI cord and take the HDMI output to your TV's DVI input. Then run the optical output to for audio to your receiver.

If you want SACD (from a compatible PS3), you will also need to run analog output to your receiver for two channel sound. For multi-channel from SACDs, you need an HDMI receiver...

Thanks for your time and great answer!

What exactly is lossless audio verses, not lossless audio?

Also, optical output from what source (tv or PS3) to my receiver?

Also, optical output from what source (tv or PS3) to my receiver?Blu-Ray has a couple of different "lossless" formats that are compatible with the PS3. Doldy True HD & Uncompressed PCM 5.1 are supported by the PS3. They are said to have less compression than DD and DTS. Currently, the PS3 does not support DTS-HD Master Audio, but it may in the future.

Here is a thread on AVSforum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=770354&page=1&pp=60) that should help.

The PS3 has an optical digital output that you can send to your receiver.

monoprice.com has hdmi switches and I think you can get a dvi to hdmi cable.

good avs thread, I didn't know you had to use HDMI to get true DD

Thanks for the info uofmtiger. I was just about to purchase a PS3 for the BD player, assumed optical would handle sound.

Now I realize every AV receiver I own is obsolete. :tears:

If your receiver has 5.1 analog inputs, you can get a standalone BD player that has the 5.1 analog outputs (Sony has one), and listen to the new HD audio formats that way.............
Good luck!

So, if I get a new HDMI receiver, and use my PS3 and use my 65 inch tv with DVI.
How is the best way to hook it up for surround?
Do I need an HDMI switcher to the DVI on the tv?

That suggestion was if you kept your current AV receiver. Most new AV receivers I've seen have at least 2 inputs and 1 output(to TV).

Others can give you more accurate info on HDMI.

I was going to get the PS3, same price as most of the BD players plus it has the games.

A CirCity sales rep told me 50% of the people who purchase PS3 only use them for a BD player.

I thought the PS3 only sent DD 2.0 thru the optical?

That may be for sacd playback............but over HDMI.
I'm pretty sure it sends 5.1/6.1 over optical, like normal players.

I'm not sure if you were thinking this but just in case:

Until you buy a new receiver with HDMI capability, you can use the PS3's component video output to send the video signal to your monitor.

Audio issues: (please someone correct this if it is not correct! Or make sure to read the player's manual) unless something has changed recently, when Dolby Digital Plus is chosen from the disc's menu, the audio signal emanating from the optical/coaxial digital output of a hi-def video player is actually DTS.

That happens because Dolby Digital Plus uses a higher data rate than the first Dolby Digital format, but since "regular" receivers cannot handle that format, inside the player it is converted on-the-fly to the DTS format using DTS' highest data rate, which is 1500kbps. This rate IS supported by any receiver with a DTS decoder and 1500kbps is basically equivalent to a 500kbps MP3 file, so it can sound very good.
