View Full Version : MA-230 Power transformer heat?

Just curious if anyone who owns an MA-230 could give me an idea of how warm the power transformer in their amp runs? Mine seems to operate at a fairly high temperature. It is hot enough that you can't hold your hand on the side of it for too long. Seems warmer than what I've become accustomed too on my other older Mac gear like my 1700' and 1900' receivers? Trying to figure out if I have a potential problem? The two output transformers are only warm to the touch. Thanks!

Have you checked the tube bias recently, and have you checked the filter capacitors to make sure they are not running hot, indicating leakage that will cause the power transformer to over heat.

Tired caps could do exactly that. Original power supply ones are too old to be in there still. Time to take the bottom plate off and have a look see. Take pictures to post here for help if you are not sure.

I finally got one of those ray gun things that measure temperature. After recapping my MR-71, I thought the tx was pretty hot but it was "only" 117 F after being on for several hours. I would have guessed much hotter but I was way over estimating its temp.

Of course, Carl is right about re-capping those old tube units. It's not optional, it's a must do thing for the overall safety of your unit. :thmbsp:
