I know cigar smoke is bad for a projector.
But is it fatal?
Or can you get a couple of years out of it?

I think we are here to talk about smoking around gear guys......so........if you wanna flame e/o do it elsewhere please.
As for the topic of the thread....I used to smoke around my gear but got tired of cleaning everything ALL THE TIME. I don't know about projectors but I DID have multiple computer problems related to smoke. This was in a house that would at times have 5 or 6 chain smokers in it though. As long as you stay on top of cleaning stuff WELL and it's not excessive i don't think it's gonna significantly decrease the life span. But i am not basing this on any sort of experience.:music:

really?? In the same room as your Mac and other fine gear..?
I love a good Habana, but I cant see lighting it near my gear.
Fresh air is better anyway...)
I think my MAC1700 is waxed in by 1926 Padrons, and kept it working circa 35years.
No other Mcintosh gear in the Cigar room.
How long would a new projector last??

I take mine down once a month and clean it out...compressed air mostly, and a wipe down.
Its 3 years now, and the unit has to go in for service anyway...and i dont smoke around it.

To the poster of the thread, I do not smoke around my gear. If I had a projector I wouldnt smoke around it either. I usually enjoy the cigars on the deck or patio.
I have a friend who smokes in his home and it seems as though he is periodically having some problems with his electronics. I assume its because of the smoke.

Not sure why I bothered reading this thread, with all its flaming (trolling?) distractions :nono:, but as for smoking and projectors, I wouldn't put them in the same room. The old CRT (3-tube) types fare somewhat better, since the fronts of the tubes can be cleaned without destroying the coatings. That's why you see them used the most in smoky old sports bars. BUT NO projectors will perform well with a layer of chemical and particulate gunk over the optics, so it just isn't a good idea to bring them near each other.
If you do "have to" smoke in the same room with a projector, maybe try a smokeless ashtray and some kind of fan and/or air purifier, to keep the smoke away from the projector while you are smoking and also reduce the amount of smoke that stays in the room to drift to it later.
As anyone who has tried to clean gear from smokers' homes will tell you, that gunk gets onto and into everything, everywhere, and it can be a tough challenge to completely remove it. It reduces performance, hastens deterioration and shortens the life of gear. [Not to mention making the whole room stink like stale cigars/cigarettes - a smell that makes non-smoking visitors likely to :puke: ].

We shall..and it seems since the thread was edited, we must.
I believe my first post had some merit though

I smoke cigars in my "Hide-A-Way" (see a pic in members photo area), it is my listening room/home theater . I installed a power vent in the ceiling....the type that the power unit is in another room....can't hear it run (uses the flex type hose to connect to the ceiling vent and also to the outlet in the wall to the outside)....works great.....sucks all the smoke out of the room.........can't even tell that I smoke in there...........:smoke:

Someone told me I could just wipe the projector lens often, and everything would be fine. True or false??
6 guys, smoking cigars and watching football, will overpower all air systems.

A premium cigar leaves no lingering "stink." I personally enjoy the smell of a premium cigar, but totally understand that some folks don't.
When I actually had money for cigars, I could smoke one in my car, and the next day there would be no odor. People couldn't believe I smoked in it. The ammonia has been leached from the tobacco in a premium cigar during the aging process, that is the clinging odor people associate with smoking... at least that is how it was explained to me. Cheap cigars aren't aged, and are laden with PG and other chemicals just like cigarettes are... they do leave a "clinging" odor.

Just curious as to what cigars you smoke? Right now I am enjoying Romeo Y Julieta Reserve, Montecristo Media Noche, CAO Gold Maduro, and Ashton Maduro's. I have never smoked a cigar that didnt leave some sort of odor, at least for a few days. While I myself enjoy the aroma produced by cigars many do not. Most people notice the cigar odor right away, I have found.

Always an odor! Or smell of success...hmm
If in your car, turning off the A/C with windows open helps big time!
Once its in the A/C system, you are done.

As a heavy smoker let me say.....
First of all.. I hate the habit....
Secondly, I wished I didn't subject my home, my clothes, or my gear to it... but reality and life says shit happens....
I have never had a smoke related problem with my gear. Yes, I do have to clean lenses, and screens more often than the average bear, but once again, (sh)it happens...
I figure I am trashing my lungs, my heart, and my body faster than anything else... I can't cart my shit behind the hurst and take it with me, so WTF... enjoy life as you like...
If you are more worried about you gear more than your life, then your priorities are screwed up worse than mine....
