I finally was able to fix my Yamaha TX-950. I had noticed that it didn't tune as well as my other fair-to-middlin' tuners, so I started looking at the front end. With help from Dr*Audio I figured out how to align the antenna and RF stages of the front end. That went well, except the ferrite core of one of the coils was broken, and would not turn. Today I was finally able to extract the broken pieces, and insert another core that I cannibalized from another tuner (that's currently out of play).

I made the final adjustments, and got success! Stations were now being picked up considerably better than before.

Here's the question: This tuner's tuning strength meter is a 20-step bargraph, that reads from 0-100. Is this indicative of the modulation percentage, or something else? Or is it just numbers for numbers' sake? It sure is the nicest digital tuning meter I've seen.

The owner's manual available here:
http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/av/english/AFT/TX950.pdf
says that the meter "indicates the signal level of the received station".

I'd imagine that means "relative strength", but maybe it could be calibrated with known input levels by a tech. :dunno:
