10pm Wednesday a guy locally put his Philips N4520 up for sale. I see it 9am Thursday morning and call and it was already sold:tears: And these are not the most well known decks!

I'm starting to think any more it's a case of all things old are new... I've noticed a big surge in vinyl and tape.. guess everyone is tired of Cd's and MP3s finally..

A friend of mine has a Teac A-6010 (IIRC) complete with the original cover and some tapes that I'm picking up in a couple of days. I don't really care for using it but am going to use it for decoration since it's kind of cool looking.

One of the local thrifts had a TEAC a couple weeks ago, it was going (gone) for $150.00, just last fall I bought a similar TEAC for $31.00 at the same place. The demand seems to be creeping up....I did score a pile of recorded tape last week, around 10 plus rolls.

My personal feeling is minimalist design is going away and gadgets with moving parts and buttons are coming back in. Stereos the size of a brick with micro-speakers will be replaced with the "rack systems" of the 70's, just look at all the commercials now with vintage equipment in the background......

I think people like myself are getting tired of CD's, especially CD-R's. Why can't they play perfectly in some players while others skip or do not play at all? :thumbsdn:
Tapes are cool, they can play on any machine from a cheap portable to the most expensive deck. It make me wonder the longevity of CD's. I know cassettes can last for over 25 years since I still have the ones I recorded when I was a teen, they still sound great. Open reel tapes also.

So, I'm going to dub off all of the CD-R's that I recorded onto cassettes. I'm looking around for a reel to reel recorder like the Pioneer RT-909 I used to have. I might get something smaller like a Teac. I see them for $100 only on Craiglist. Is there a place where I can buy blank tapes?

I got one with the original cover, too, and the box. Mine does NOT work, though....:tears: Looks to be a great deck.

For me there are a few reasons for having a R2R. The sound, watching those reels spinning, the build quality, editing can be fun, and they remind us all of an easier, fun time in history. Also my Grandfather always had one till the day he died and I feel like I have carried on his passion.

David,
Why not unbox that TEAC - do a preliminary troubleshoot - open up a new thread - so that we can put our heads together and get that beast back on song.
It might be something as simple as a missing "dummy" plug.

What's ironic about this statement is that at least in my area, R2R prices have taken a bit of a dive in the past year or so. For example, Teac X-2000s used to demand over $1000 in good condition but just a couple months ago, I had a tough time getting $600 for my mint low-hours deck. As with any market, interests shift, conditions change. Higher-end Sansui prices are nuts now, but McIntosh has dropped. Go figure.
