I bought a belt kit for this model, which contains 3 belts. The service manual also shows three belts which are labeled "capstan belt", "control motor belt", and "counter belt B". I know that the original capstan belt had decomposed, because there were pieces of the "black goo" in the bottom of the machine, the same width as the new belt I have. The control motor belt was still intact, so it was obvious which new belt it was, and likewise, where it goes. The counter belt B is another story.
First off, there is an empty idler pulley in the assembly, but for the life of me, I don't see anything which this would line up with it. There are no remnants of a third belt either, and the digital counter works fine. All the functions work fine too. Is this "countet belt B" an option for other models, possibly with a manual counter? I'm stumped.
Thanks for any info.:scratch2:

According to the ZX-9 service manual, counter belt B goes from the take up reel hub to the auto shut off assy. on the lower right front of the transport mechanism. You will have to take off the cassette well cover plate to get to this. You said your deck works fine so the existing belt should be intact. It is a fairly long belt but has almost no drag on it so even if it was a little stretched it should still work. Hope that helps.

Thanks nakmandan! Guess I missed that in the SM I have. I'll check into it. The belt I have left isa kind of long, thin, square belt. I'll let you know.:thmbsp:

Who'd you buy the belt kit from, and how much did it cost?

I got it from vintage-electronics.cc. About $18 plus shipping. I had originally ordered one from Mars communications, who are supposed to have top notch belts. But after a 3 week wait for a belt to come in, I was informed that the capstan belt would be yet another 4 weeks. They refunded my money and I went this route. The new belts appear to be correct, but I have no idea about their quality. I've bought some bulbs and belts from them before.
