cuase ya, he thinks he can get 250 a channel is he right?

Your friend is full of s...! He will be lucky to get 100wpc..When putting unit into 2-channel mode all you do is shut off the rear and center channel amplifiers.

which pioneer does he have?
the 100 watts per channel are most likely slighly exaggerated, I'm sure that when they measure the maximum output power, it'll be lower.
then, in stereo mode it might output the 100 watts...
don't expect much more from a HT receiver.

Depends.
Some HT receivers will put out near their rated power on all channels, some won't.
Most HT receivers will put out more on 2-ch because the power supply doesn't have to distribute it's power across several channels.
So, your friend may be getting 100-120w in 2-ch mode, but certainly no where close to 250w.

I have a Pioneer HT receiver in my "great room" (IMO, the real "great room" is where the vintage stuff is). I installed JBL speakers in the wall when the house was built last year, and have a subwoofer.
I started shopping for a HT receiver when I was building the house, because Crown Preamps, Poweramps and 5 or 6 JBL 4311s have a zero WAF.
Best Buy had a nice Pioneer HT receiver on sale at the same time with a serious rebate that resulted in the final cost being mere pocket change.
Now to the point. It's rated at 100wpc. Here's the lowdown on this particular receiver.
Continuous power STEREO : Front - 100 W (20 to 20,000 hz, THD 0.7% @ 8 ohms)
Continuous power SURROUND : Front, Center, Surround and Suround Back - 100 W per channel (1khz, THD 1.0% @ 8 ohms)
Fine for HT, OK for casual listening at low to moderate volumes. WAF? High. Remember, the good stuff is in the "Stereo Den".

Did he hear your Marantz 2385 at FULL POWER? With good speakers of course. :D My SX-1250 is approx 25 watts per channel less than your Marantz and my ears were already buzzing. Had to close my ears when I was showing my friend it's potential.
